Jandéek’s lavish scoring for winds in the Sinfonietta has slightly impeded the programming of this piece but it is world-famed as one of the most brilliant orchestral works of our century. The ideal instrumentation as listed above is not always readily available and the follow ing suggestions for alternative instrumental forces are made with an eye towards retain ing as much of the original color as possible. ALTERNATIVE A: For the tenor tubas substitute baritones. This will keep the conical bore instruments on parts originally written for them. For the bass trumpets substitute trombones. ‘This similarly will keep instruments with cylindrical bore on their proper musical parts. ALTERNATIVE B: Substitute four trombones for both tenor tubas and bass trumpets. In any case, the doubling of parts, except where scored by Janidek, is not recommend- ed as the balances must be most carefully established for the effective performance of the Sokol Fanfare, (If the bass trumpet part is played by trombones or baritones, the doubling should be carefully considered in order not to disturb the balance. The doub- ling was possibly an afterthought because one bass trumpet is not heavy enough to bal the tenor tubas.)
