ME692: Welding Technology, 2023-24-II Semester

1. Objectives: This course is designed to acquaint undergraduate and postgraduate students


in mechanical engineering with a detailed study focused on welding technology. Students
will learn about the different welding processes, thermal and flow aspects during welding,
microstructural growth, stress generation, and defects in welding.
2. Prerequisites:
✓ Prerequisites for UG: TA201 and TA202.
✓ No prerequisites for PG.

4. Lecture schedule and Venue:

Tuesday: 2-3:15 PM, L18

Friday: 2-3:15 PM, L18

5. Grading policy:
✓ Attendance in lectures =10 %.
✓ If a student’s attendance falls below 80%, they’ll receive zero marks for attendance.
✓ Those who have 80 % and above attendance will get 10 marks out of 100.
✓ Two quizzes (each has a weightage of 10%) =20%
✓ Quiz dates: 10th Feb 2024 and 6th April 2024 13th Feb and 6th April 2024
✓ Quiz location: L18, L19 and L20 (seating plan will shared before the exam)
✓ Time: 6:00 PM to 7:30 PM
✓ Mid-Sem Exam =28%
✓ End-Sem Exam =42%: For the end-semester exam, a candidate may not be allowed
to appear if their attendance falls below 80%.
6. Attendance policy
De‐registration: Those who do not have 75% attendance at any point of time may be
de‐registered from the course (Only absence due to medical reasons excluded. For this
HC medical certificate indicating that you are advised to take rest is necessary. The
DOAA or the Institute should approve medical leave. Without DOAA approval, leaves
will not be considered.).
Mid and End Sem: Appearing in the mid-semester and end-semester examinations is
mandatory for passing the course. Failure to participate in these exams will result in an
automatic F grade.
For the end-semester exam, a candidate may not be allowed to appear if their
attendance falls below 80%.
Absence in Quizz/Exams: Makeup Quizzes/Mid-sem only with the Instructor’s and
the DoAA’s approval. Consideration will be given only to medical reasons. For this HC
medical certificate, it is necessary to indicate that you are advised to rest during the
applicable dates.
Consent for late drop: If you do not have 30% attendance or if you are absent in
quizzes or mid-semester exams, you will not be given consent to drop the course.
7. Class and Exam Policy:
✓ Cell phones are not permitted in the classroom. Please set all mobile devices to
silent mode during the classes. If you use a mobile device during classes, your
attendance may be marked absent.
✓ Mobile phones should be turned off during exams and quizzes.
✓ Calculators are allowed; bringing in class and exams/quizzes is mandatory.
✓ Any students caught cheating will be penalized with F grades, and additional
sanctions will be pursued based on IITK DOAA guidelines.
✓ Any form of academic dishonesty (use of a mobile or carrying the mobile during
exams or quizzes and talking with classmates during exams) will be rewarded with
an F grade. Additional action may also be taken.
