- Interfeces for stakeholders to access the system
4.1 Components
4.1.1 HAS (Home Automation System)
All system related to the management, control and operation of the home appliances. A System
Center will be essential to integrate the functions of the various home appliances. The Major
areas for HAS will energy management (HVAC and Lighting), safety, security, fire and emergency
response. Others areas may be on Chore Automation and Personal Environment.Major IT
applications include :
- Energy management program which is formulated by the users, such as demand limiting and
time scheduling (after-hour, holidays, time of day, etc.);
- Automatic signaling to emergency services such as fire, police or healthcare services;
- Chore Automation : automation of routine home tasks using electronically controlled home
appliances.

4.1.2 External Linkages

A gateway will be necessary to enable external linkages to access on-line services which will be a
major feature of Putrajaya city. Potential on-line services accessible from the home are:
- Teleservices : home banking, home shopping, interactive TV, telecommuting, distance learning;
- On-line government services : payment of road tax, license, registration, etc.;

4.1.3 IT Interfaces
Interfaces for users will need to consider all members of the family such as parents, children,
elderly members, etc., to ensure that it will be easy for everyone to operate and configure the
system. The major interface point is the HAS system center, which may be a PC that operates a
central integration point for HAS and the gateway to the external on-line services.

5. Benefits to Stakeholders
Any family member, young or old, is able to operate sophisticated appliances

When many services are made on-line, home users can access all these services anytime
without leaving the home. adhering to require access controls.

Integration and automation remove the burden of operating the home appliances which are
becoming more affordable and sophisticated. The home takes care of the family instead of been
taken care of by the family.
6. Issues
Home automation is a new technology where no major standard can provide all applications. A
top-down approach in identifying user applications and bottom-up approach in identifying
available technologies will be required in the planning stage.

A market-driven approach to home-building may result in some homes with limited built-in
services.

Installation of cables for HAS network is more cost effective during construction than after
completion. Decision on household applications should be made early

7. Scenario
Hussein loves his house, a home which has been taking care of his family ever since he moved in
two years ago. The home system wakes him up for work, prepares the bath tub and hot coffee,
feeds his pet gold fish, pays his bills right on time, and makes sure that the swimming pool has
the right amount of chlorine all the time. It saves himmoney too.

It also saves lives. The system saved his ailing father one afternoon by calling in emergency
paramedics and notified Hussein who was at work. Hussein does not even mind working at home
half the time, i.e.on telecommuting, when he can enjoy the comfort of his home and yet have all
the access to do shopping and chat with his friend in the next neighborhood.

Life is not too complicated after all if your home there for you.
