IPFEST 2024 PAPER AND POSTER
COMPETITION
PRELIMINARY CASE
General Theme
The Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries or OPEC stated that
Global oil demand will rise to 110 million barrels a day in about 20 years,
pushing the world’s energy demand up by 23%. These numbers are not a piece
of cake for the world to fulfill. There is an urge to meet the demand numbers
so that energy scarcity doesn’t take place. This concern will be solved by
boosting oil production rates all around the world. On the other hand, oil
production activity is often judged to be a massive contributor towards the rise
of CO2 emission that correlates to climate change.

The previous statements show that the petroleum industry needs resilient yet
clean energy. Indonesia, as one of the countries that conducts oil and gas
production activity, has two dreams to help accelerate the country towards a
more ideal energy sector. Indonesia has the target of achieving the production
target of 1 million barrels of oil per day (MMBOPD) and 12 billion standard
cubic feet of gas per day (BSCFD) by 2030. In reducing the emission, Indonesia
has an ambition to reach Net Zero Emission by 2060. However, SKK Migas
stated that the actual condition is the lifting rate of oil sits as low as 612.300
BOPD and it is just 0,1% from the world reserves (IEO, 2022). Along with that,
Indonesia’s energy sector currently produces a high amount of emissions, as
high as 600 million tonnes of carbon dioxide in 2021.

The current energy sector condition in Indonesia still requires massive support
from the industry players. Technology and human resource advancements are
necessary to support in reaching industry dreams and address future
challenges. Some technology developments have been present in the industry.
For example, water and steam flooding, Various types of EOR (Enhanced Oil
Recovery) have been proven to increase productivity and efficiency. Cloud
computing and machine learning are also showing a positive impact towards
the industry. The human resources of the oil and gas industry should also take
part in upgrading their hard skills, soft skills, and knowledge.

IPFEST 2024 bring up the theme “Accelerate Energy Security and

Cleanliness Through Inventing Innovations that Involves Mutual
Collaborations Within the Industry.” It is projected that IPFEST 2024 will be
a multifunctional collaborative platform for the oil and gas industry
stakeholders to incubate breakthrough ideas that will be helpful for the
development of the energy sector. The developments are targeted for energy
resilience with less emission produced to realize Indonesia and the world’s
ideal energy condition.

Paper and Poster Competition Subtheme

Petroleum industry is an industry that will always grow, even evolve,
especially with the rapidly-growing technology. Some said that the petroleum
industry has good prospects for every person involved. On the other hand, A
plentiful group suggests that the Petroleum Industry is an industry full of
uncertainties. Oil and gas production activity is often stigmatized to cause
climate change due to the emissions results. Along with that, this industry is
predicted to go extinct soon due to the declining oil reserves around the world.
Those concerns are haunting the industry but there are so many ways to
overcome it. Supporting the worldwide concern, Indonesia, as one of the
countries with oil and gas industry activity stated two targets to achieve.
Indonesia seeks to achieve a higher rate of oil production and zero emission.
Those statements fulfill the demand of a more secure and cleaner energy.
Looking around the world, specifically Indonesia’s energy condition, paper and
poster competition carries the theme “Optimizing Innovation and Utilization
of Sustainable Energy for a Better Future.”
Problem Statement
As we know, the implementation of technology in the sustainable energy is
still in the developing stage especially in Indonesia. Yet, the human resources
to utilize this technology in the oil and gas industry are few or even less. The
delegates are expected to express their knowledge and creativity that will
generate innovations for developing the technology and method in the oil and
gas industry in the form of paper and poster based on this theme “Optimizing
Innovation and Utilization of Sustainable Energy for a Better Future.”

So, this competition will provide the chambers for all participants to represent
their ideas based on this subtheme:

1. New technology for sustainable oil and gas practice

The oil and gas industry has been the backbone of the global economy,
providing the necessary energy to support various sectors of human life.
However, the negative impact on the environment and dependence on
limited resources pose challenges to the sustainability of this industry.
Therefore, a revolutionary approach in the form of new technology is
needed to ensure sustainable practices in the exploration, production,
and processing of oil and gas.

Currently, the adoption of new technology in this industry is still in its

early stages. Hence, efforts to integrate more sustainable and
environmentally friendly technologies into the daily practices of the oil
and gas industry are imperative. Through this sub-theme, we invite
delegates to design innovative solutions presented in the form of a
paper and poster to bring about positive changes in the oil and gas
industry, with a focus on new sustainable technologies.
2. Fuel technology innovation
Innovation in fuel technology is critically important in the context of the
oil and gas industry, which is continuously evolving rapidly. Alongside
technological advancements, there is a paradigm shift towards the
utilization of more efficient and sustainable energy resources.

In this context, fuel technology innovation becomes not only a necessity

but also an opportunity to enhance operational efficiency, reduce carbon
footprint, and support the transition towards sustainable energy.
Improving combustion efficiency, developing environmentally friendly
fuels, and enhancing sustainable oil extraction methods are key aspects
to be explored in achieving this transformation.

In fostering fuel technology innovation, we are not only creating

solutions to address current challenges but also opening new
opportunities for the growth of the oil and gas industry sector. Therefore,
through this sub-theme, we invite delegates to design innovative
solutions presented in the form of a paper and poster to create a more
sustainable and competitive future for the oil and gas industry, aligning
with global developments towards cleaner and environmentally friendly
energy.

3. New and renewable energy

New and Renewable Energy (NRE) is increasingly becoming a primary
focus in supporting the global transition towards more sustainable
energy resources. Amidst the demand to reduce environmental impact
and dependence on fossil fuels, NRE has emerged as a promising
solution. Although the oil and gas industry has played a crucial role in
global economic growth, challenges related to environmental impact
and resource limitations cannot be ignored.
In this context, the integration of the oil and gas industry with new and
renewable energy becomes a strategic step towards creating a
sustainable future. NRE can be applied as an environmentally friendly
alternative, helping to reduce greenhouse gas emissions generated by
the oil and gas industry. The development of NRE technologies also
provides opportunities to enhance operational efficiency and expand the
energy portfolio used by this industry.

Currently, Indonesia, as a key player in the oil and gas industry, faces
pressure to reduce carbon footprint and harness new and renewable
energy. The government and industry stakeholders need to collaborate
in formulating policies that support the integration of NRE in the day-to-
day operations of the oil and gas industry. It is not just about addressing
external challenges but also opening new opportunities for diversifying
energy sources and optimizing innovation to realize a sustainable oil and
gas industry.

Therefore, through this sub-theme, we invite delegates to design

innovative solutions presented in the form of a paper and poster to
create innovative solutions that not only optimize the use of new and
renewable energy but also maintain the competitiveness of Indonesia's
oil and gas industry in the era of sustainable energy.
