7 concepts of geographical understanding.

Place
A place is somewhere that has been given a name and location by humans, it can be man built
or natural. Place can be anything as small as your bedroom to as big as the earth. Place is
somewhere important to people, like school and your house, they have meaning to you and
your life.

Space
Space has three main elements, location, spatial distribution and organization. Spaces can be
divided into spaces like a small area like a school has a space for eating, learning, playing and
running the school. While a big space like a town or suburb has a space for homes,
entertainment, businesses, industry, sport and recreation. Space helps us know locations and
patterns, better understanding of our world.

Environment
There are many different environments on earth. But very few are natural, which is when the
plants, animals, soil, rocks and climate are mainly untouched by man, most environments are
man or human environments. Environments have their own look, climate and wildlife in one
area.

Interconnection
Everything on the planet living or not is connected, there is nothing that is in isolation. Natural
connection is like the water cycle and food chains, there is also human activity such as the
movement of people, production, trade of goods and money links between countries. The
easiest way to take it is as the earth is like a body, all the components work together to stay
alive and in balance.

Sustainability
Sustainability is saving and rationing natural resources. Like if we use too much coal or oil there
won't be any left for future generations. Making sure that we save and sustain the resources, for
they take a long time or never come back.

Scale
Scale is to see how many people go somewhere to see whether it needs improving to match the
amount of people that are there. They can study the local, regional, national, international and
global.

Change
Overtime change happens, sometimes it’s really quick and clearly visible and other times it's
really slow and not so visible. Change is continuously shaping and changing the world around
us and its environment. Some are natural like volcanoes while some are man-made like climate
change.
