SERVING THE COMMUNITY OF FIJI WITH PASSION FEBRUARY 25 - MARCH 25, 2024 PRICE: 50 CENTS

$140 million Fiji Water expansion

Earth’s finest bottle water company, Fiji Water recently undertook its largest capacity
expansion project in Yaqara.
Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka on February 22 inaugurated the $140million expansion project
that encompasses two new state-of-the-art speed production lines installed at the company plant.
PM Rabuka, in his official address, commended the founders of The Wonderful Company
and co-owners of FIJI Water, Lynda and Stewart Resnick, for their unwavering commitment to
community well-being and environmental sustainability.
He expressed gratitude to Mr and Mrs Resnick for their exemplary leadership and adherence
to the mantra of supporting the well-being of employees and their families.
“The last time I was here at the FIJI Water complex was way back in 1996 during my first term
as Prime Minister when I was invited to open your original water bottling plant. Now, 28 years
later, I’m glad to see how this iconic and global brand –“FIJI WATER” – continues to grow in
leaps and bounds as today we mark yet another milestone,” he said.
PM Rabuka highlighted the remarkable impact of the FIJI Water Foundation, which, over
the last decade, has invested more than $17 million in various projects nationwide, benefitting
thousands of lives across Fiji
The Foundation has also supported a number of efforts aimed at strengthening local
infrastructure across Naiyalayala. In collaboration with the village water committees, it has
supported the ongoing maintenance of clean water sources to the villages of Naseyani, Nananu,
Rabulu, Togovere, and Drauniivi, with more initiatives underway,” he stated.
“I am also proud to declare that Earth’s finest water is now sourced from one of the most
advanced water factories globally,” he added.
The Prime Minister, at the same time, praised FIJI Water’s commitment to providing a safe
and innovative workplace for its nearly 400 employees.
Highlighting the positive impact on the economy, the Head of the Peoples Coalition Government
further remarked, “The capacity expansion project will increase our export potential and further
boost our foreign exchange earnings”.
“This investment demonstrates FIJI Water’s confidence in Fiji and its commitment to
expanding operations in our country.”
He reaffirmed the Coalition Government’s dedication to supporting both foreign and local
investors, emphasising the creation of an enabling environment to make Fiji a friendly and
stable country for investment.
The Prime Minister expressed optimism that such investments would generate employment
opportunities and improve the standard of living for the people in Fiji.
Meanwhile, in its effort to deepen its longstanding commitment to sustainable practices, FIJI
Water has invested $300 million in various operational upgrades since 2011, which include
installing a new bottling line in 2016, and transitioning 48 percent of its manufacturing process
into recycled plastic in 2023.
The latest project also incorporates technologies that are designed to reduce the facility’s
environmental footprints while meeting the growing global demand for Earth’s finest water now Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka during the inauguration of the $140million expansion project

Alarming rate of NCDS in the workforce

Fiji is currently dealing with the “triple trouble” of over-
weight, obesity and underweight, including micronutrient
deficiencies.
This was revealed at the launch of the National Policy on
Healthy Catering and Sale of Food and Beverages for all
Government Ministries and Institutions at the Civic Centre
in Suva on February 14.
The Ministry of Health revealed details of health trends
from screening 3,456 individuals in the civil service and
private institutions, and findings highlighted that the prev-
alence and progression of health risks in the service under-
scores the need to adopt this policy.
Officiating at the event, Head of Government, Prime Min-
ister Sitiveni Rabuka stated that the national policy will pro-
mote optimal nutrition and foster healthy eating habits for
all civil servants and the community.
“The policy will ensure that meals, snacks and beverag-
es available to everyone at all Government facilities offer
healthier choices. When the whole of Government is pro-
viding healthier food to visitors, clients and civil servants,
there will be an increased demand for local fruits, healthy
greens, vegetables and roots crops. The increased demand
for fresh products means good news for farmers, fishermen
and market vendors and (hopefully) a concomitant reduc-
tion in our national import bill in terms of unhealthy pro-
cessed food,” PM Rabuka said.
The Prime Minister also stated that consumption of al-

Hindu Mandir: India PM Modi inaugurates

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi

has inaugurated a grand Hindu temple in
the United Arab Emirates (UAE) during a
two-day visit to the country.
The BAPS Hindu Mandir in Abu Dhabi
is built on a 27-acre (11-hectare) plot do-
nated by the UAE government.
India had announced its construction
during Mr Modi’s visit to UAE in 2018.
Analysts say the temple will likely boost
the government’s Hindu nationalist agen-
da ahead of the general elections due in
two months.
The opening comes weeks after Mr
Modi inaugurated a grand temple to Hin-
du god Ram in the northern Indian city
of Ayodhya. It replaces a 16th-Centu-
ry mosque torn down by Hindu mobs in
1992, sparking riots in which nearly 2,000
people died.
The temple in Abu Dhabi is run by the
BAPS Swaminarayan Sanstha, which calls
itself a “spiritual, volunteer-driven fellow-
ship” aimed at “fostering Hindu values of
faith, service and global harmony”.

Is Rakuro the new Caucau?

Source: sportnet247.co.uk

Taniela Rakuro, a flyer for the Fijian Drua, is anticipated to

have a great season in Super Rugby Pacific.
The back three player wasn’t the Drua’s first pick in 2023,
but he made an impression on the field, scoring four tries in
seven games.
Rakuro appears to have greater opportunities in Super Rugby
this year, since Kalaveti Ravouvou and Eroni Sau are among
those who will be leaving the side ahead of the 2024 campaign.
He participated actively in the preseason and scored two
great tries in their match against the Brumbies.
Rakuro, whose skills have been compared to the legendary
Rupeni Caucaunibuca, lit up the first half as the Fijians ulti-
mately lost 43–40 to the Australians.
The flyer can eat up ground and effortlessly shrug off defend-
ers, even if he is not quite as stocky as the renowned Caucau-
nibuca.
In case you haven’t seen it yet, Tier 2 Rugby shared a video
of Taniela Rakuro’s heroics against the Brumbies along with
the comment, “Here she is looking very Caucau-esque during
the Fijian Drua pre-season.”
“Last year, he made his Super Rugby debut with four tries in
seven games. But, will this year be the one he truly establishes
himself as a professional player?”
In 2023, the Drua created history when, in only their second
season of competition, they made it to the Super Rugby play-
offs for the first time.
It included an incredible victory over the eventual champi-
ons, the Crusaders, during the regular season; however, the
same team ended their title dreams in the quarterfinals.
Fiji’s remarkable performance at the Rugby World Cup,
where they overcame Australia and advanced to the quarterfi-
nals, was partially attributed to their involvement in the tour-
nament.
Even though Simon Raiwalui’s team lost to England in the

The Flying Fijians loose forward has been with Fijian Drua since its inception and a standout
leader on and off the field through the Club’s first two seasons.
Swire Shipping Fijian Drua Head Coach Mick Byrne said: “Meli is no stranger to the role
having been the captain last season and we look forward to seeing him take on the challenge
once again as we head into 2024 Super Rugby Pacific competition with seven crucial home
games here in Fiji.”
“As a young leader, this is a learning process for Meli and we are confident that he will
continue to grow even further. He will be strongly supported by the leadership of Mesake Doge,
Tevita Ikanivere and Iosefo Masi, ”said Swire Shipping Fijian Drua Head Coach Mick Byrne
Derenalagi was part of the 2020 Olympic Gold Medal winning Fiji 7s team and has made 5
appearances for the Flying Fijians during the 2023 Rugby World Cup and 19 appearances for

NRL closer to Fiji than before
Australia’s National Rugby League (NRL) has never ever been this close to Fiji.
The initial news of the historic pre-season clash between the Melbourne Storm and Newcastle
Knights on February 24 at Churchill Park in Lautoka was received with cheers and awe.
But now, in another historic first, the coveted NRL Provan-Summons Trophy has been brought
to Fiji and on display at the Fiji Airways Premium Lounge at the Nadi International Airport.
The National Airline, Fiji Airways, in conjunction with the NRL agreed to the trophy, being
displayed for guests visiting the Lounge, en-route to the United States for the NRL Vegas Round.
Fiji Airways Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer Mr Andre Viljoen says this was
part of the airline’s efforts to bring the NRL closer to the people of Fiji.
“The Provan-Summons Trophy has never been outside of Australia and it’s quite historic that
on its first international voyage, Fiji Airways is able to have this piece of NRL history on display.
It is quite an honour for the National Airline. We share this milestone with all Fijians who are
also avid fans of the NRL.”
The Trophy will be on display at the Lounge for two weeks before making its way to the NRL
Vegas Round in the United States.
“We are even prouder of the fact that Fiji Airways carried the prestigious Trophy from Sydney
Australia, and followed will transport it to Los Angeles from where it will make its journey to
Las Vegas,” Mr Viljoen added.
Fiji Airways is the official partner for the 2024 NRL Vegas Round, a doubleheader at Allegiant
Stadium with the Sea Eagles taking on the Rabbitohs, and the Roosters going head-to-head with
the Broncos.
Meanwhile, Fijian Bati captain Tui Kamikamica said the opportunity to return to his homeland
and play an NRL trial is something that has been 12 years in the making.
“Especially for myself, growing up in Fiji we love rugby, so to come back to my homeland is
such an awesome feeling” Kamikamica said.
“I can’t wait to play in front of family and friends, last time I played in front of them was 12
years ago so it’s been a long time coming,” he said.

Autar laid to rest

The late Roblin Autar will be best remembered as a football

coach that brought glory days back to both Nadi and Lautoka
districts.
The no-nonsense mentor was a coach that never stepped
back when pressure was put on to him to get the desired results.
In a eulogy during his funeral on Friday February 16 at the
Girmit Centre in Lautoka, he’s close family members spoke
about how he loved football, and how passionate he was in
carrying out his duties.
He was a man who had soccer at heart and who followed his
instincts rather than listening to outside gossips or noise as they
say in the football front.
One man who saw the rise of Autar as a prolific coach is
Jitendra Kumar, better known as JK, a former Nadi Football
team director/president and current vice-president of Fiji FA.
Kumar vividly remembers the year 1996 when the association
decided to rope him in as Nadi coach.
Nadi back then had some big names like Timoci Raju,
Ponipate Naulu, Ramendra Dutt, Alipate Driu, Emosi
Baleinuku, Serevi Vula, Watisoni Voli, Anirudh Singh, Kini
Tubi, Masi Naitasiwai and Vinod Kumar to name a few.
“As pint sized he was, at first he didn’t know how to train
those household names as he was dwarfed by their huge frame,
but after a few days he got to know the players well and things
started to gel in well guiding Nadi to win the Fiji FACT and
BOG that year, a major win recorded after several years,”
Kumar recalled. Autar also went on to record victories with his
hometown district Lautoka in early 2000. Close to 200 people
paid their last respect to Autar. The former Greens and Blues Former Lautoka and Nadi coach the late Roblin Autar will be best remembered as the coach who brought back glory to the
