The Digicel Fiji Kulas were knocked out of the OFC Women’s Olympic qualifier by New
Zealand in a heavy 1-7 defeat at the semi-final stage.
The Fijians had no answer to the Kiwis onslaught with the Kiwis opening the account as early
as the 6th minute through Indiah-Page Riley.
NZ built on their confidence to rake in four more goals to lead 5-nil at the breather.
With the game already sealed, NZ took their feet of the pedal allowing Fiji to dictate play.
The Kiwis, however, managed two more goals before Fiji’s lone goal in added time was
scored by Cema Nasau.
NZ coach Jitka Klimkova while congratulating her players for the big win took time out to
recognise Fjji’s effort.
She said they had been impressed with how Fiji had played in their earlier games and prepared
accordingly.
“We saw improvements in how they played so we came out prepared. For us we are happy
with the big win and prepare ourselves game by game. We have Solomon Islands in the final so
we will now shift our focus to them,” Klimkova said.

NRL closer to Fiji than before
Australia’s National Rugby League (NRL) has never ever been this close to Fiji.
The initial news of the historic pre-season clash between the Melbourne Storm and Newcastle
Knights on February 24 at Churchill Park in Lautoka was received with cheers and awe.
But now, in another historic first, the coveted NRL Provan-Summons Trophy has been brought
to Fiji and on display at the Fiji Airways Premium Lounge at the Nadi International Airport.
The National Airline, Fiji Airways, in conjunction with the NRL agreed to the trophy, being
displayed for guests visiting the Lounge, en-route to the United States for the NRL Vegas Round.
Fiji Airways Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer Mr Andre Viljoen says this was
part of the airline’s efforts to bring the NRL closer to the people of Fiji.
“The Provan-Summons Trophy has never been outside of Australia and it’s quite historic that
on its first international voyage, Fiji Airways is able to have this piece of NRL history on display.
It is quite an honour for the National Airline. We share this milestone with all Fijians who are
also avid fans of the NRL.”
The Trophy will be on display at the Lounge for two weeks before making its way to the NRL
Vegas Round in the United States.
“We are even prouder of the fact that Fiji Airways carried the prestigious Trophy from Sydney
Australia, and followed will transport it to Los Angeles from where it will make its journey to
Las Vegas,” Mr Viljoen added.
Fiji Airways is the official partner for the 2024 NRL Vegas Round, a doubleheader at Allegiant
Stadium with the Sea Eagles taking on the Rabbitohs, and the Roosters going head-to-head with
the Broncos.
Meanwhile, Fijian Bati captain Tui Kamikamica said the opportunity to return to his homeland
and play an NRL trial is something that has been 12 years in the making.
“Especially for myself, growing up in Fiji we love rugby, so to come back to my homeland is
such an awesome feeling” Kamikamica said.
“I can’t wait to play in front of family and friends, last time I played in front of them was 12
years ago so it’s been a long time coming,” he said.
“It’s such a huge occasion...once it got announced last year I couldn’t take the smile off my
face,” he said.
“Every time I come back to Fiji I get to see the smiles on the kid’s faces and now they get to
see all the superstars...all the big names in the league,” he said. Nathan Cleary gets his hands on the Provan-Summons trophy once again after Penrith beat
