Research is a systematic process of collecting, analyzing, and interpreting information in order to


increase our understanding of a phenomenon about which we are interested or concerned (Leedy &
Ormrod, 2013).

RESEARCH came from the French word “recherché” which means “to go about seeking” or to “search”

IMPORTANCE OF RESEARCH
1. Research helps engineers, architects, scientists in providing designs that are creatively beautiful
and adapt to the ever-changing society.
2. Research leads to designing a new product or service, which have high demand among
consumers.
3. Researchers in this field deal more with social issues such as stress, leadership style, child labor,
teenage pregnancy, human trafficking, drug addiction etc.
4. Researchers on best ways to acquire skills can be guided on how to teach the art of doing skilled
works.
What research is NOT (Leedy & Ormrod, 2013)
1. Research is not merely gathering information.
2. Research is not merely rummaging around for hard-to-locate information.
3. Research is not merely transporting facts from one location to another.

Why do we conduct RESEARCH?


1. It is through research that we can find ANSWERS to many of our unanswered questions.
2. We want to find reliable evidence to support our findings, conclusions.
3. We want to discover NEW knowledge.
