Human Body Reflex Test

Aim:
3

Variables:

Method:
1. Hold the ruler at the 30 cm mark so that the 0 cm end is just at your friend's index
finger.
2. Release the ruler while your friend is looking at it. They are to grab the ruler as
quickly as possible with their index finger and thumb and record the distance it
travelled before they grabbed it.
3. Repeat the experiment three more times.
4. Repeat steps 1-3 to test auditory reaction time by closing their eyes and saying
now when you drop it
5. Repeat steps 1-3 to test tactile reaction time by closing their eyes and tapping
them on the shoulder when you drop it.

Results:

Types of
Responses
Average
8cm 10cm 7.5cm 8.5

4cm 6cm 6.5 4.666
Auditory

Tactile
Create a graph to represent the average results of the test. This should be a column graph as
“visual, auditory and tactile” are non-continuous (discrete) data points.

Discussion:
1. Referring to your results, what trends did you notice? Which type of response
resulted in the shortest distance.

2. What factors would have influenced your results?

3. Comment on the validity of your results.

4. Comment on the reliability of your results.

5. Comment on the accuracy of your results.

6. How could you have improved the experiment that you conducted?

Extension:
Using the same principles of the method on the previous page, adjust the method to suit an
experiment when you test the reaction time of the same individual using this website.
