CHAPTER 4 : JOB ANALYSIS AND JOB DESIGN

“ Are firms moving away from telecommuting ? “

Discussion Questions

1. How can a firm know when it’s a good idea to implement telecommuting or not ?

In general, telecommuting (also known as working from home, or e-

commuting) is a work arrangement in which the employee works outside the office,
often working from home or a location close to home (including coffee shops, libraries,
and various other venues). Rather than traveling to the office, the employee “travels”
via telecommunication links, keeping in touch with co-workers and employers via
telephone and email. The worker may occasionally enter the office to attend meetings
and touch base with the employer.

The company should be able to tell if the telecommuting is the best idea which
is the company image will be prove and it based on the telecommuting. In the case
study, the company which is Yahoo they decided to implement the telecommuting
because they know that their company is known as a big time of corporation. Which is
Yahoo must find new creative way for them to stand with their competitors. The
employee of Yahoo being appreciate with the ability to work from a distance and
without physical contact. The employees always giving their opinions and also
suggestions on how they need to improve the company performance. The employee
will be more productive and effective when they do their work at home. Based on
Marissa Mayer who have been become new CEO of Yahoo, she said that Yahoo’s
telecommuters weren’t logged onto the Yahoo’s intranet when they were supposed to
do so. The communication of the employee with each other also become less because
they not communicate between them.

2. Can you think of any other pros and cons related to telecommuting that aren’t
mentioned in this case ?
There are pros and cons that related to the telecommuting that are not mention
in this case. The first one is the employees will often be able to work during the
emergencies, which keep the organization running in case of inclement whether or other
circumstances. Telecommuting can be attractive to a variety of employees who need
flexibility at the workplace. For example, working parents can benefit form a jobs that
enables them to spend more time at home. Allowing telecommuting also can give the
employees in remote locations. The employers can reduced costs in the office through
less electricity used and less office supplies needed. Allowing the employees to work
from home can save a company money on permanent work stations for new staff
members.
The cons of applying telecommuting to the employees are the first one is the
employees are left out of social activities. Socializing among the employees are very
important on order to build the positive trust and support in the workplace. Those who
are work from home will miss the opportunities that occur during social activities. The
other cons of telecommuting less face time with managers and the employees can be
major communication roadblock. Moreover, the benefit of brainstorming and
innovation through on-site collaboration diminish and also the unproductive employees
have an easier time to hiding out from doing the job given.
