IVSEM. B.E. (MANUFACTURING ENGG.) DEGREE MAKE-UP EXAM.JULY 2006
SUBJECT : MEASUREMENT & METROLOGY ( MME-226 )
REVISED CREDIT SYSTEM
(28/7/2006)
Time: 3 Hours. MAX.MARKS: 50
Instructions to Candidates:
™ Answer ANY FIVE full questions.
™ Use of limits-fits-tolerance tables are permitted..
™ Missing data may be suitably assumed.

1a) Differentiate between line standard, end standard and wave length
standard. Give minimum three points. (03)

1b) Distinguish between clearance fit, interference fit and transition fit.
Minimum three points are needed. (03)

1c) In a back pressure pneumatic comparator with 1% linearity, the

measuring orifice diameter is 1mm and control orifice diameter is
0.5mm. The supply pressure is 500 kN/m2. Overall sensitivity is 3200.
Find the length of the scale of the pressure measuring device. Also
find pneumatic sensitivity and range of linear measurement. Assume
b=0.5. (04)

2a) How do you verify that the given surface plate is straight by using
autocollimator. Draw neat sketches and graphs. (06)

2b) A machined surface profile is to be checked for its smoothness. How

do you assess the smoothness accurately. (04)

3a) Compute the limit dimensions of the pair φ 40 H7d8. Find the fit. Sketch
the arrangement showing the tolerance zones of hole and the shaft. (03)

3b) Differentiate between Bessel point and Airy point. Give minimum three
points. (03)

3c) How the following parameters can be checked in a gear:

i) runout ii) backlash. (04)

4a) Find the dimensions of Go and NoGo of plug gauge and ring gauge to
control the production of the pair φ25H7f8. Consider the wear allowance
for both the gauges. (04)

4b) It is desired to measure the angle of a machined component. Which
instrument do you prefer for accurate measurement. Justify your
selection with proper reasoning. (03)

4c) Explain how a tool-maker’s microscope is used to measure the outer

diameter, root diameter, pitch and angle of the thread. (03)

5a) A turned shaft is to rotate in a reamed hole at low peripheral velocity.

The designer has chosen the clearance fit with φ 50 H8c7. Calculate
the limit dimensions of hole and shaft. Draw the sketch of the given
assembly. The clearance is 0.005mm. (03)

5b) What do you understand by wear allowance and gauge maker’s

tolerance? According to modern system how these two parameters
are considered for both plug and ring gauges. Explain with neat
sketches. (03)

5c) Describe the following tests for parallelism.

i) Parallilism of two axes.
ii) Parallilism of an axis to a plane. (04)

6a) Calculate the Ra Value of a surface for which sampling length was
8.0mm. The graph was drawn to a vertical magnification of 10000 and
areas above and below the datum line were:
Above: 180 90 155 55mm2
Below: 70 90 170 150 mm2
Horizontal magnification is 100. (03)

6b) Differentiate between:

i) Hole basis system and shaft basis system.
ii) Unilateral and bilateral tolerance.
iii) Upper and lower deviation. (03)

6c) Explain the method of checking squareness by

i) Indicator method.
ii) Engineer’s square. (04)

7a) Sketch and explain the use of snap, ring and adjustable snap gauge. (05)

7b) Define i) Sampling length ii) Lay iii) roughness iv) Waviness. (02)

7c) Find the limit dimensions for an interference fit on hole basis system for
a basic size of 35mm with an interference of 0.05mm. The tolerance
on the hole is 0.025mm and tolerance on the shaft is 0.015mm. Sketch
the arrangement. (03)
