Elements of story

Plot: is a series of events that usually centers on a conflict or problem. It is a chain


of related events in a story.
- The plot builds suspense, the growing tension felt by the reader.

Most plots have five stages:


1- The exposition introduces characters, setting, and conflict.
2- The rising action presents complications that intensify the conflict.
3- The climax is the story’s moment of greatest interest—and the point where the
conflict is resolved.
4- In the falling action, the story begins to draw to a close.
5- The resolution reveals the final outcome of the conflict.

Setting: is the time and place of the story.


Conflict: A struggle between opposing forces that drives the action of the story.
Motivation (n.): What the character wants; why a character behaves or acts a certain
way.
Resolution: The final part of the story where the conflict is resolved.
Exposition: The introduction of the story where the characters are introduced, as
well as the basic story line.
Climax: The turning point of the plot, where the story is at its highest point of
tension.
