Medical Rotation JD 2023
The Junior Specialist Doctors Rotational Programme is a programme designed to provide high quality
training in Medical and Surgical Specialities at University Hospitals of Birmingham (UHB) NHS Trust,
which includes Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham, Heartlands Hospital, Good Hope Hospital, and
Solihull Hospital. The Trust is a regional centre for neurosciences, cancer, burns and plastics, and has
the largest - solid organ transplantation programme in Europe. We have the largest single critical care
unit in Europe. UHB has strong links with The University of Birmingham (UoB). The Trust has a strong
commitment to research. Currently, the UHB/UoB campus has the highest concentration of clinical
trials in Europe, and more clinical researchers are trained in Birmingham than anywhere else in the
UK.
Following a review of UHBFT Medical workforce structure in 2008, the Trust launched the Junior
Specialist Doctor (JSD) grade, a Trust grade training role (outside the HEE/Deanery standards) aiming
to deliver career training and development to doctors in a clear structure with educational support.
The JSD grade has been discussed and agreed with the BMA Local Negotiating Committee and is now
firmly established within the Trust. The specialties available at each of the UHB hospitals are as
follows:
• QEHB: Emergency Medicine, Acute Medicine, Critical Care, Elderly Care, Respiratory Medicine,
Cardiology, Haematology, Oncology, Renal Medicine.
• Heartlands, Good Hope and Solihull: Emergency Medicine, Acute Medicine, Critical
Care/Anaesthetics, Elderly Care, Respiratory Medicine, Cardiology, Haematology, Oncology,
Renal Medicine, Gastroenterology, Genitourinary Medicine, Infectious Diseases.
KEY SKILLS
The programme is fixed term contract which will consist of rotational placements in medical
specialties. The posts will be based at all 4 hospitals within UHB Trust. The post provides with
opportunities to undertake complex and difficult work in a fully supported capacity in a leading edge
teaching hospital. The specialities available in the rotation are:
The rotations are designed to train for core training competencies in the respective areas. Each
placement will be for 6 months before rotating to the next placement for training. Other specialities
could be added in to the rotation depending upon the requirement of training and development of
the Individual and availability.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
The Trusts corporate and departmental inductions are compulsory before starting the post. The JSDs
will have access to all UHB courses suitable to their development and training needs.
There are various Ultrasound, Simulation, Literature search, critical appraisal, Radiology, Trauma and
life support courses available in house towards achieving the competences.
Working Arrangements
The JSD will play a crucial role in the clinical teams of the relevant specialties. Where possible the
opportunity to attend outpatient clinics and theatre lists will be made available.
There will be Consultant led ward rounds each week. In addition the post holder will attend regular
ward rounds with the other junior team members. Cover at consultant level is always available.
The post holder will have an identified clinical and educational supervisor. They will be invited to
attend the departmental meetings, as well as an active Post Graduate programme.
All posts are full-time with out-of-hours rota participation, up to a maximum of 48 hours as per the
European Working Time Directive, with prospective cover for annual leave, study leave and bank
holidays.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
This job description is designed to assist post holders with understanding what is expected of them
in their role. University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust may ask them to undertake
other duties, as required, which are not necessarily specified on the job description but which are
commensurate with the grade of the post.
The job description itself may be amended from time to time in consultation with the post holder,
within the scope and general level of responsibility attached to the post.

EDUCATION
E- Portfolio
We provide an e-portfolio and portfolio support through our dedicated Medical Education team.
In addition to the clinical/ education supervision you will receive and which will include an annual
appraisal and support for revalidation. You will also have access to the Trust’s very broad range of
education and training opportunities for its junior medical staff and which include access to the
following:
Library resources
There are library facilities in all four hospitals associated with the Trust which provide access to a
wide range of online evidence-based resources. The majority of Library resources can be accessed
on-site and from home with an NHS Athens account. Staff can register for a free account using the
registration link or contact the Library. User guides and training are also available to help you make
the most of the Library resources. The Library holds following regular training days every year.
Cochrane Library
The systematic reviews written by the Cochrane Library are all available in full text for your
convenience. Informal and hands on sessions are available about how to search Cochrane Library.
Library also holds following : anatomy.tv, Best Practice (BMJ)BMJ learning, electronic books Emerald
Management Journals, Library journal collection, Oxford Medicine Online
Radiology Training
Dedicated sessions with the experienced radiographers.
Terms and Conditions of Service
• The post is covered by the Trusts Terms and Conditions of Service for Junior Specialist
Doctors as amended from time to time.
• Basic salary scales match national StR scales
• Placements are full-time (48 hours)
• The appointment is subject to a satisfactory Occupational Health clearance and Criminal
Records Bureau check. You will be expected to provide evidence of immunity against
Hepatitis B.
• The successful candidate will be expected to reside within a reasonable distance from the
hospital. It is the responsibility of all medical staff to ensure that they are appropriately
registered with the General Medical Council. If registration lapses employment may be
terminated.
• All employees are expected to comply with appropriate Trust Health and Safety policies.
Additional Duties
Where required the post holder will be required to work up to 48 hours per week.
In addition, all medical staff may be required to perform additional duties in occasional emergencies
and unforeseen circumstances at the request of the appropriate consultant/manager.
Mandatory Training
The post holder has to attend all the mandatory training (eg Fire, Clinical Governance etc. as per
trust policy.
Clinical Governance
All medical staff will be expected to participate in all aspects of Clinical Governance. The successful
candidate will be expected to participate in clinical audit.
