FILM REVIEW

The characters are Lolo Juanito, the father of five children. Charing, Dolores as the

eldest sister, the gay son of Lolo Juanito Junee and Isidro as the eldest son. The movie

started when Charing was eating their breakfast, as they were eating, a woman

knocked on the door and when they opened the door, she said “patay na si lolo”. This

made the character “Charing” cry because she lost a father and had fainted on the

ground, same as her siblings too. They cried when they heard about the death of their

father. While the movie progresses, they now have a problem with the funeral, they are

short of money to pay for the funeral services. This made the siblings argue on what to

do and the movie progressed after that. After I watched the movie “Ded na si Lolo”, it

made me remember the last funeral I attended where my family had arguments about

the money to pay for the funeral and the way we believe in things like putting a rosary

on the hands of the dead so no other family member will pass away soon or

positioning the coffin in a way so the feet of the dead is not facing the door. These

superstitious beliefs are also passed down by generations of family and it really makes

the Filipino culture and beliefs still standing and the indie film really shows the

characteristics of Filipino culture like the resiliency shown in the family that even in

tough times, Filipino people know how to recover from it. But with the characters inside

the movie, the realism of the movie really stands too because of how the children of
charing are obedient, this obedience really is a part of having a Filipino family, second

is what we called “bayanihan” where the people helped carry the coffin inside the

house. I noticed this because bayanihan is a traditional symbol of a Filipino. Bayanihan

is one positive culture of our country, helping others without asking for rewards and

volunteerism is a Filipino characteristic too.
