Appendix

A. Principle of low-frequency test

IEC 61869-2 standard claims, CT test can be done in lower frequency than the rated, and avoid
secondary windings the risk of failing to allow the terminal voltage. The only requirement is that the
core has the same size on the magnetic flux.
IEC 61869-2 standard formula for calculating the magnetic flux given by:
t
 (t )   [U CT (t )  RCT I CT (t )]dt  0 (A.1)
0

Where,

RCT : Secondary winding resistance

U CT : Secondary winding terminal voltage

I CT :Secondary current

0 :The initial flux Alternation

 (t ) : T the magnetic moment of the cross-linking

The definition of Core Voltage:

U C (t )  U CT (t )  RCT I CT (t ) (A.2)

When the core voltage U C (t ) for the sinusoidal signal are: (A.3)

Core voltage RMS to meet:

m 2fm
U Crm s    4.44 fm (A.4)
2 2
where:

f : for the sinusoidal signal frequency

As can be seen, the largest settlement in the same chain of magnetic flux m , the core is proportional

to voltage and frequency. Therefore, as long as the core has the same size on the magnetic flux, then
the test CT can be lower than the rated frequency of the conduct, when the core voltage amplitude
required to reduce the requirements, test requirements of the secondary winding of the client voltage
also be reduced accordingly. On the frequency of low-frequency test results can be rated after the
conversion frequency of CT test results.

36
B. 10% error curve

Current transformer error was mainly due to the existence of exciting current I 0 , which allows the

secondary current I 2 and secondary lateral I1' is not only not the same, but different phase, which

resulted in the error of current transformer. The ratio of differential current transformer is defined as:

I 1'  I 2 I
 '
 100  0'  100 (B.1)
I1 I1
Protection requires primary current I1 of CT is equal to the maximum short-circuit current, the ratio
difference is less than or equal to 10%. In the ratio difference equal to 10%, the secondary current I 2 ,

converted to primary current value I1' and the exciting current I 0 meet the following relationship:

I1'  10I 0 (B.2)

I 2  9I 0 (B.3)

Definite M as a multiple of the maximum short-circuit current in primary side, K for the current
transformer ratio, there are

I 1M K  I 1' 10 I 0
M   (B.4)
I 1N K  I 2 N I 2N
Where

I1M The maximum short-circuit current in primary side

I 1N Rated current in primary side

I 2 N Rated current in secondary side

In ration error is 10%, the maximum allowable burden impedance Z B is calculated as:

E0 E
ZB   Z2  0  Z2 (B.5)
I2 9I 0
Where

Z 2 For secondary winding impedance of current transformer

E 0 Is induction electromotive force of secondary winding of Current transformer, and the relationship

between E 0 and I 0 is expressed by excitation characteristic curves.

Based on the above formula, you can get 10% error curve expressed by multiple( M )of maximum

short-circuit current in primary side and allowable maximum burden impedance ( Z B ) of CT secondary

side.

38
D. Actual Connection Method

When using CTP-120PA, the basic connection steps (as Fig.D.1) for testing CT are as following.
1)The grounding terminal of CTP-120PA is connected to the earth reliably.
2)Connect one terminal of CT primary side and one terminal of CT secondary side to the earth.
3)Make sure other terminals of CT disconnect from transmission lines, and the other windings are all
open.
4)Use 2.5mm2 red line and black line to connect CT secondary side to AC Output terminals S1 and S2
of CTP-120PA, use 1.2mm2 yellow line and black line to connect CT secondary side to M1 and M2
terminals of CTP-120PA.
Please note that two black lines are connected to the same terminal on the protected ground of
secondary side of CT.
5)Use 1.2mm2 green line and black line to connect CT primary side to P1 and P2 terminal of
CTP-120PA. Please use black line to connect P2 to grounding terminal of CT primary side.
6)After checking the wiring and making sure the connection 100% correct, then start the test.

E. Four-terminal method of measuring principle wiring

Impose a voltage output signal Vs to a source impedance R, will produce a current I, in Fig. E.1

Fig.E.1 Fig.E.2 Fig.E.3

For measurement of the impedance value, the impedance measurement of the voltage U is needed :

R V /I
From the measured impedance voltage source to some wires, wires have resistance r, resulting in V =

Vs, so if the accurate measurement of impedance R, can not simply replace the Vs with V.

Impedance R of measuring circuit should be used Fig.E.2 connection method, measuring the voltage

meter voltage must be separate from the R at both ends with wire connection to the accurate

measurement of R value of the voltage V. R is used at both ends by four wire cables, it is known as

4-terminal wiring method. Fig.E.3 of the wiring is wrong.

Using CTP-120PA to measure the resistance, variable ratio, excitation, the principle of transformers is
required to use 4-terminal wiring method in Fig.E.4.
