INTRODUCTION
Hysrund SHP (3.30 MW) located in Tehsil Churah,
Distt. Chamba (H.P.) was allotted to M/s Nanal Hydro
Power Consultancy Pvt. Ltd. on boot basis. The main
components of the project such as (Desilting Tank,
Water conductor system, Forebay and Penstock) are
underground involving higher the construction cost.
Initially the Desilting Tank, Forebay and Penstock
were open structures, but due to steep terrain and non
availability of open space adjacent to HRT, the
Geological consultant recommended underground
structures. The cost of construction envisaged in the
approved DPR was Rs. 2788/- Lakhs, exceeded to Rs.
3915/- Lakhs. 2
Details of Project Structures from
Intake to Tail Race
PROJECT
Proposed Hysrund hydroelectric project is a run - of - the
river type development on Joiner Khad, tributary of Baira
River which in turn is a tributary of Ravi River. The
joiner khad is a perineal stream (Glassier Fed).
 Project structures
The civil engineering structures of this project are
discussed as below:-
 Trench weir
For diversion of Joiner khad inflows, drop type trench
weir is constructed at E1+ 1400.00 m. The size of weir is
25.00 m long and 1.80 wide to draw a design discharge of
6.15 cumecs. Shingle flushing system is provided at
intake chamber to flush the shingle back into khad
through Shingle flushing conduit.
3
 Desilting arrangement
A underground desilting tank is provided at the end of
a 206 m long feeder tunnel downstream of trench
weir. The desilting tank is designed to exclude all silt
particles down to 0.25 mm size. The desilting tank
comprise one chamber of size 52m x 6.00 m x 6.20 m
with central silt gutter type silt flushing system.
 Water conductor system

For carrying the inflows from desilting tank to forebay

power tunnel is provided. The length of power tunnel
is 1288 m. The water conductor system carry design
discharge of 6.15 cumec at 2.03 m/sec velocity with a
bed slope of 1:750. 4
Forebay
At the end of water conductor system, an underground
forebay is provided to cater for the sudden
acceptance/rejection of load. The capacity of forebay is +
1200 cum to provide peaking/balancing storage for +3
minutes. The size of forebay has been proposed at 120 m
x 6.00 m x 4.00 m rectangular and it will be provided
with suitable spilling arrangement.
 Penstock
The water from forebay will be led to power house
through a underground penstock of 1300 mm diameter
and ± 125 m long. The penstock pipe is fabricated from
steel plates confirming to IS 2062 with welded joints.
Suitable anchor blocks are provided to support the
penstock pipe. The penstock pipe carry the design
discharge of 6.15 cumecs at 4.33 m/sec velocity. Inlet
Valve is provided to regulate the flow to power house.
The length of main penstock will be + 125 m, which
bifurcate near power house into two branch penstocks to
feed two turbines.
5
Power house
A surface power house is provided on left bank
of Joiner khad with normal tail water level at E1 +
1330.00 m. The power house have two no’s,
horizontal axis Francis turbines driven generating
units of 1650 KW each. The outflow from turbine
shall be led through a tail race channel of RCC box
section to Joiner khad. A switchyard is provided
along the side of power house building.
The power generated from this project is
evacuated in joint mode with Upper Joiner
SHEP(12MW) to HPSEBL sub-station at Kurthala
at about 15.50 Km distance. On the suggestion by
upper joiner consultant a joint pooling station at
Ganed has been established to record the generation
from upper joiner and Hysrund Project before
feeding into the joint mode evacuation system. 6
