3. What do those countries have in common ?

Nearly ten years ago, UNICEF released a report on child marriage as part of the first ever Girls
Summit, an event aimed at ending child marriage, forced genital mutilation (FGM), and other
practices that harm and disenfranchise women and girls within a generation.
The report shows that the prevalence child marriage goes hand-in-hand with poverty and lack of
education:

 There is a substantial gap in the prevalence of child marriage between the poorest and
richest. Females in the poorest quintile are 2.5 times more likely to marry in childhood
than those living in the wealthiest quintile.

 Accordingly, lower levels of education are found among women who married in
childhood. In Malawi, for instance, nearly two thirds of women with no formal education
were child brides compared to 5 per cent of women who attended secondary school or
higher levels of education.

—> It is obvious that child marriage not only attaches to neediness and lack of education,
this problem also causes lifelong and intergenerational consequences for girls and women.

9. Example of child marriage in media

Child marriage is also common in the media, and the message is sent through Bollywood
movies, especially the series ” 8-year-old bride “ . This TV series follows the lives of Anandi and
Jagdish, who were married as children, and the challenges they and their families face over
several decades. About ten years ago, “8-year-old bride” was released on TodayTv channel in
Vietnam at 8 p.m from Monday to Friday every week. The series became a phenomenon that
everyone used to love talking about.

Plus, social media, like WhatsApp and Facebook, are largely used to be in touch with friends and
family members and to send messages, but, its indiscriminate use by teens is resulting in child
marriages and there are a few such examples in the district

According to the officials of the Women and Child Welfare department, rampant use of social
media by teenagers is resulting in child marriages and there are a few such examples in the
district. “Owing to the influence of social media, several youths , still in their teens, develop
friendship, which turns into love, mostly before attaining the legal age for marriage.”
