AND OFFSHORE PROPERTIES i" [industrial ‘ isk InsurersPREFACE ‘These general recommendations for spacing are presented as guidanca for plant designers, contractors, project engineers, and fire protection personnel interested in optimum plant layout. They have been developed as a result of the study of many fire and explosion losses experienced by the Association over the years in all parts of the country. Further, in many cases they represent good practices being followed or ex- ceeded by many safety conscious companies in the industry today: Existing oil, gas and petrochemical plants have been modified to operate at “higher capacities and with greater storage requirements than contemplated in their original layout. These features together with today’s trend toward “jum- boizing” of new plant facilities presént a substantial increase in the risk poten- tial. For these reasons, the initial site analysis for proposed new construction or additions should include careful consideratign for space allocations, water supply, drainage, outside exposures, and fire protection facilities.
