Riddle at Lion’s

Gate Study Guide


Introduction: “Riddle at Lion’s Gate” is the law and criminology
module in the Beaconhouse Notion of Academia, designed to immerse
high school students in the complexities of legal systems and criminal
investigations. This module challenges delegates to think like legal
professionals, employing analytical and investigative skills to navigate
diverse legal scenarios. It integrates elements of forensic science,
encouraging critical examination of evidence and logical reasoning.
Additionally, the module offers a unique courtroom experience,
sharpening public speaking and legal argumentation abilities. This
blend of law, science, and advocacy provides students with a
practical engaging insight into the legal profession and criminal justice
system.

Round
1 This round, titled “Juris Maze” assesses delegates’ legal
acumen and proficiency in legal language. Delegates will
be required to draw connections between diverse
scenarios presented to them in both civil and criminal law,
by referring to relevant precedents established in prior
cases provided beforehand via a guide. They will be acting
as members of the judiciary by identifying the point of law
and legal principles applicable to these scenarios utilizing
case law. They will thereafter present a written judgement
based on their analysis.

2 This round, aptly named “Code Breakers” assesses


delegates’ analytical abilities and reasoning based on
thorough examination. Delegates will be required to
unravel a hypothetical crime by combining their legal
expertise with investigative skills. A detailed crime
scenario, inclusive of evidence, witness statements, and
forensic reports, will be provided for their examination.
They will have to assemble the puzzle pieces to identify
the perpetrator and consequently solve the crime by
building the pretext of a legal case based on the available
evidence. They will also have to detect inconsistencies
and employ logical reasoning to ensure that their
conclusions align with legal principles.

3 The climatic round, titled “Constitutional Legal Challenge”


assesses delegates’ advocacy skills in a courtroom
simulation set within a national legal context. Detailed
information about a case, pertaining to constitutional
violation, will be disseminated to the delegates in
advance. Delegates will be assigned to either prosecution
or defense, with the responsibility of crafting compelling
arguments for the case. They will thereafter be required to
prepare legal arguments, examine witnesses and present
evidence. They will also delve into the intricacies of legal
argumentation and master courtroom etiquette.
