The cuNerts are planned to be constructed next to the ralway embankment and jacket into position across the embankment, below the raivay line, while the ralwvay line remains operational, 2. Specifications for Jacking Culverts Through Embankments ‘These specifications gover all operations necessary for and pertaining tothe supply and installation of precast concrete culverts through embankments by tunneling and jacking 3.1 Definitions ‘The following definitions wil apply: Tunneling and Jacking means the culvert installation procedure whereby a culvert is advanced through an embankment by means of jacks while simultaneously excavating from inside the culvert an opening for the culvert to pass through. Tunneling means the excavation of a passageway through an embankment without disturbing the ‘embankment material and roadway above, by means of: a) A tunneling machines b) Aboring machine ©) Ahhand excavation Jacking means the advancement ofa culvert into the tunnel by: 4) Applying a pushing foroe to the tall end of the cuvert using jacks or ») Applying a pulling force tothe tal end ofthe culvert from an exterior source located atthe destination end ofthe installation. 3.2 Mater “The Contractor shal be responsible for the supply of all materials designated inthis Specification, a) Precast Concrete Culverts Precast conerete culvers, related materials and components shall conform tothe requirements of the Engineer's Speorfcations for the Supply and Delivery of Precast Concrete Culvert and to the requirements ofthis Specification ‘The size and class of culverts to be supplied shal be as specified on the Plans or in the Special Provisions. The Engineer wil alow the Contractor to jack a larger than design diameter culvert if there is adequate cover (minmum of one metre unless otherwise approved) and the trenched sections are constructed to design diameter and design invert elevations (using approved reducers). The Engineer may agus the culvert lengths to corespond with the increased diameter ‘Alladkitional costs incurred to install larger culverts than specified inthe tender shall be at the Contractors expense. All cuets to be installed by tunneling and jacking shall be a minimum Cass II jacking quality and shall have tongue and groove joints. Cencrote pipes shall not be hauled or installed untl 5 days after their fabrication date, ‘Alljoints shall be rubber-gasketed and be capable of providing a watertight seal ll culvert ends shall be smooth and concentic to properly receive the rubber gasket. Joint assembly shall be made in accordance with the manufacturer's specifications. All joints subjected to jacking pressure shal be fited with a suitable cushion to prevent point loading ofthe joint 4, Construction Methods 4.1 Open Trench Excavation and Backfill ‘Open trench excavation wll be allowed no closer than two metres from the outside edge of ‘shoulder orto other such limts as indicated on the Plans orn the Special Provisions. Culverts in the embankment side slopes shall be inetalld in trenches in accordance withthe Engineer's ‘Specifications for Placing Culverts. Notwithstanding Specification, Culvert Gravel will not be paid for directly but wll be considered incidental to jacking 42 Tunnel Excavation ‘The tunnel shall closely fi the outside shape ofthe culvert and allow no more than 25 mm spacing between the pipe and the tunnel at any point. “The length of tunnel excavation preceding the culvert shall be kepl to a minimum and at no time exceed one metre. PS-EPMO Ua2010 IQHINA 4.3 Adverse Soll Conditions and Obstructions | there is any substantial change inthe character or nature ofthe subsurface soil conditions oF that obstructions are encountered during tunneling operations, which adversely affect the Contractor's production or construction procedure, the Contractor shall immediately notify the Engineer. “The notice shall provide detais of the change in subsurface soil conditions or obstruction encountered, any proposed construction procedure revision thatthe Contractor intends to Undertake, as well as any othr pertinent and related information, ‘The Engineer will review the information provided as well as other data and information as appropriate to assess any recuitements for change to the Contract work. Any extra work resulting from change to the Contract work will be addressed in accordance with the General Conditions, Where the rate of production is affected due to encountering an obstruction during tunnelling ‘operations, compensation wil be paid for at the unit price per hour for ‘Delay Time for Obstruction Removal. 48 Disposal of Excavated Material ‘Suitable material obtained frem trench excavation or tunneling shall be used for the backfil placed from the top ofthe culvert to the finished grade line ofthe embankment side slopes. Unless cothenvise indicated on the Plans or in the Special Provisions, surplus excavated materia shall be ‘spread uniformly over the slopes adjacent to the ends of the culvert 4.6 Filing Existing Culverts 65. Quality Control 5.1 Engineers Representative wil bo appointed to supervise, plan, coordinate and implement of al construction activities on site, Also assist with the administration ofthe construction contract in accordance with the delegated duties and responsibilities as issued by the engineer. IQHINA Consuiting Engineers & Project Managers has an ISO accredited Site Management ‘System, of which the appointed Engineer's Representative will have to implement on the construction site, The IGHINA Site Management System covers detalled procedures and processes of effectively mentaring construction works and processes, from receiving and issuing construction drawings, to receiving and issuing post construction drawings, and all activities in between, ‘An induction will be conducted with the relevant parties atthe beginning ofthe project in wich ‘quality management procedures and documentation will have to be introduced. Quality audits of site procedures and documentation will be conducted regulatly to ensure compliance. Ensuring that proper records are kept, ste inspection registers are filed properly, and all works are property signed off and dated 5.2 Lines, Levels and Grades “The Engineer wil provide one benchmark and two alignment reference points. “The Contractor shall construc the culvert tothe line and grade as shown on the Plans or inthe ‘Special Provisions, 5.3 Tolerances “The finished culvert shall not deviate from grade by more than 50 mm, nor from alignment by ‘more than 150 mm, The reltzn to established line and grade shal be at arate not exceeding 60 mm per 10 metres. 5.4 Final Inspection and Clean-up ‘ter the culvert installation has been completed, the Contractor shall remove all uty lines, tracks, jacking equipment ard any other temporary constuction materials and debris from the culvert. The Contractor shall leave the culvert in a clean and reasonably dry condition suitable for final inspection by the Enginzer and shall make good any defective work tothe satisfaction of the Engineer.
