Sarovar Project for the month ending July-2021

1.0 BRIEF DESCRIPTION

PROJECT: Sardar Sarovar Project Benefits
(1) Irrigation : 1.855 Mha (75% area drought prone) in Gujarat.
: 0.246 Mha in desert districts of Rajasthan
(2) Drinking Water : 25 Million population (by 2011) & 30 Million population (by
2021)
: 9490 villages + 173 urban centers in Gujarat
: 1336 villages & 3 towns in Rajasthan to a population of
approx. 4.58 million
(3) Hydro Power : Installed capacity : 1450 MW
(4) Irrigation : Through RWS & PIM, maximum water use efficiency can be
Strategy achieved. Water hazards due to over watering – salinity and
water logging – can be prevented leading to sustainable
agricultural benefits to small and marginal farmers in the
command area.

2.0 PROGRESS OF MAJOR COMPONENTS OF THE PROJECT

2.1 Main Dam
a) The construction of Main Dam has been completed. Due to huge inflow on
account of heavy rain in the catchment area during Monsoon 2019 and Monsoon
2020, the Sardar Sarovar Reservoir was filled stage wise and safely upto FRL i.e
138.68 m having live storage capacity 5800 MCM. The water level as on 31-07-
2021 is 116.51 mt. with live storage 719.51 MCM.
b) Construction of Irrigation Bye Pass Tunnel has already been completed.
c) Garudeshwar Weir :
The work of Garudeshwar weir is almost completed. The work of protection wall is
under progress. The progress of Excavation is 11.5106 LCM and concrete is 8.438
LCM up to July-2021.

3.0 ENVIRONMENTAL SAFEGUARD MEASURES

During the month, advance works of current year 2021-22 plantation- 160 ha and maintenance
of previous years plantation along the canal bank continued.

4.0 AGRICULTURAL EXTENSION AND MONITORING:

For the benefits of farmers, 12 - demonstrations on research stations and 145 - on farmers field
was conducted; 23- Training programs, 3 FIG/SHG/field day and also 345- soil samples were
collected for soil testing followed by providing soil health card. Sampling was carried out at
144 locations, for ground water depth and quality.
