Problem description ESVAGT’s ambition is to decarbonize their own operations. They aim
to find alternative fuels/energy sources for their ships in order for
them to meet stricter CO2 and SOx emissions requirements in the
future and to help their customers in decarbonising their supply
chains.

Esvagt Innovator is a diesel-electric vessel. Therefore, it is necessary

to implement a sustainable/green fuel source in order to fulfil
Esvagt’s ambition.

Research question What needs to be done for Esvagt Innovator to convert from diesel to
a sustainable/green fuel to fulfil Esvagt’s ambition?

Hypothesis By converting Esvagt Innovator from diesel to methanol it is possible

to lower the CO2 and SOx emissions, and thereby fulfil Esvagt’s
ambition

Methodology To be able to find out what needs to be done so that Esvagt

Innovator can be converted to methanol which is a low-flashpoint
fuel, the following information is required:

Information on the internet;

Classification rules and guidelines regarding low-flashpoint fuels
- These will be found on the DNV website
IMO requirements
- These will be found on IMO’s website
Information from the ship;
Fuel and fuel tank system diagrams, fuel consumption, ventilation
system diagrams, inert gas plant diagrams, general arrangement
drawings of the ship, engine diagrams, fire and gas detection system
diagrams.
- These informations will be found by visiting the ship, and
eventually by email.
