I. Introduction

Rice is one of the essential foods for Filipinos. The increase in the price of rice has a
big impact on Filipinos for the reason that it is our usual daily food. Filipinos consume it
three times a day as it serves as our edible source of survival.
The global rice market has been rattled by extraordinary developments that led to rice
prices soaring to record high levels in nearly 12 years. According to data from the United
Nations’ Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), the All-Rice Price Index for July
witnessed a 2.8 percent increase, reaching 129.7 points. Compared to the same period last
year, this figure represents a 19.7 percent surge, reaching the highest nominal value since
September 2011.
One of the main reasons being reported is India’s decision to impose a ban on rice
exports in the country’s bid to secure domestic food supplies. Since India is regarded as
one of the world’s largest rice producers and exporters, this measure disrupted trade on a
global level, triggering a rapid price escalation (Zaldarriaga, September 7, 2023)
The change in our climate could also be one of the reasons why the price of rice in the
Philippines continues to increase.
II. Objectives
To discuss why the price of rice continues to increase, and why it is impossible to reach P20/kg of
rice in relation to agricultural-related laws.
The change in our climate could also be one of the reasons why the price of rice in the
Philippines continues to increase. It has a significant effect on our crops, especially on rice,
for this reason is one of the things that slow down the harvest of rice, which affects the
decrease in the supply of rice. When the supply is low and the demand is high, the price will
increase.
We rely on the importation of rice from other countries, this is also one of the factors
that increase the price of rice because importation disruption is inevitable, similar to what
happened in the war between Ukraine and Russia, which affected fuel and food exportation.
Another example is India’s ban on the export of rice to other countries, as a result, there is a
rice shortage.
It is impossible to reach P20/kg of rice because according to the law of supply and
demand if the supply of a good or service outstrips the demand for it, prices will fall. If
demand exceeds supply, prices will rise. In this case, the Philippines is having a decline in
rice production and we only depend on imports. As mentioned earlier, if there is a market
failure, it affects the price of the goods. Therefore, reaching 20 pesos per kg of rice is
impossible.

Importation and Climate change are one of the reasons why the price of rice
continues to increase.
When the supply is low and the demand is high, the price will increase.
