Activity 3: “If Given a Chance” Instruction: If you have a chance to start a business this pandemic time,

what are top three (3) businesses you would be interested to get into? What comes to your mind why you
are interested to these businesses?

If I would given a chance to start my own business this pandemic time, i would definetely put up a coffee
shop library, convinient store, and a water refilling station since, a coffee shop library is one of my ideal
type of coffee shop that I dream of even though I have’nt try drinking coffee then also, the reason I
wanted to have a library so that book worms and study enthusiast can not just able to drink their favorite
coffee but at the same time can read their books and study well peacefully. It is quite expensive to have
coffee shop but I think it is always what I wanted to achieve where I can able to provide the needs of
those people especially students and professionals that Entrepreneurs don’t mind that much when
putting up businesses. While a convinient store is a great investment to put up since, the daily needs of
the people is already in the section and having a convinient store is one of the specific need especially of
today’s time of pandemic. And a water refilling station is also a great investment to put up in this time,
and basically it provides one of the important needs of the people which is water and having a water
refilling station is very convinient for those people that really mind that much the cleanliness when it
comes in water specifically with drinking water.

In 1958, he established a shoe store in
Quiapo, Manila. The name of the store
was “Shoe Mart”. For the time, he was
purchasing many shoes, leather goods, and
accessories. He hopes to change the way of
shoe manufacturer strategy.

And in 1970, the store became the full-line

department stores that change the name
from “Shoemart” to SM with the
pioneering store at the Makati City. He
invested in the properties for malls that
were patterned after the suburban shopping
centers.

In 1972, he opened department store after

two months of Martial laws. At the start,
the business worked slow but get succeed
with time. He continued to open more
exceeding departmental stores in such a
way that one time came, he had no space
in exciting shopping centers. He thought
about long-term goals.

On November 25, 1985, 1st supermall

opened in the city of Quezon. Today there
are 43-malls across the country Philippines
and the branches in China.

With lots of criticism and armed with the

optimism and sheer determination, he
opened supermarket, departmental store,
and tenants.

At the same time, the “Shoemart Makati”

was faced with severe strikes. At that time,
he was so disappointed, but his employees
and customer encourage him to proceed.
At this difficult time, he never discourages
and boosts his confidence to continue his
business. He was committed to achieving a
valuable goal for an organization. He not

members to follow his enthusiasm.

the team of Henry Sy. continued to plan an
expansion of mall that includes the “Mall
of Asia” which was envisioned the biggest
and most renowned mall in the region of
Asia. But planning stopped because Henry
recognized the Tsunami-like effects in
Asia. They went on progressively and open
other malls.
The business grew in numbers instead of
the size and serving various more modest
markets. The business also expands from
departmental stores to hardware stores,
supermarkets, appliance superstore, and
others.

Henry Sy. was one of the greatest bankers

so he also looked into the banking
business. He established the “Banco de
Oro” bank that was a medium-sized bank.

Henry Sy, he started selling shoes in the
streets of Manila under the heat of the sun
and the cold of the rain. At one point in his
past, Sy was shot by a shrapnel and almost
die in excessive bleeding, someone helped
him, that someone became his friend and
as an act of gratitude, he bacame a business
partner and now indeed became successful
because of him. There has been so many
obstacle in the start up process but was able
to overcome it one step at a time.

How this entrepreneur come up with his Due to the fact that he came from in a

a retail business where he sold goods at
their neighborhood and he also sold G.I

Traits I want to emulate from this The traits I wanted to emulate with the
entrepreneur great Entrepreneur Henry Sy is the spirit of
“taking risk” especially when it comes to
business and life, and the fact that he never
manage to give up with his long term goal
to become successful with all difficulties he
has to experience at the young age. I’ve
known his life ever since when I was in
my Elementary days and I was very
inspired by how he never give up with his
aims in life even though he experience to
be rejected and criticize by big
entrepreneurs in his time, instead he use
those experiences and critization for him to
succeed in his field.
Lessons I learned from this entrepreneur’s The lessons I learned from the success
success story story of Henry Sy is that having difficulties
in life is a great lesson to experience, and
being in simple state of life does’nt mean
that you are a failure and will never gain
any innovation in life, and success is not
for the people who was born with a silver
spoon in mouth, every body has the ability
and capability to have a goals and attain
success in life as long as you have the
power of striving, perseverance and
determination to reach it.
