Unit four: Traditions.

Lesson: The origin of Christmas.

The customs and traditions of many countries have combined in the USA. In the
case of Christmas, for example the tree which has now become such a typical part
of the American Christmas originated in Germany.
And Dutch emigrants took the story of Sinterklaas, the giver of Christmas
presents, to America in the nineteenth century. In time, of course, Sinterklaas
became Santa Claus.
His red suit probably originated in Scandinavia and his reindeer and sleigh in
Switzerland.
London has also contributed to the American Christmas. Christmas cards have
been popular since 1843 when Sir Henry Cole, a London banker, invented them.
There have been presents and big banquets at this time of the year since pre-
Christmas times, but historians have not discovered the exact origins of these
Christmas traditions yet; they probably never will.
Whatever their origin, all these elements have combined to produce the classic
American Christmas. And Hollywood, of course has already exported this vision of
Christmas to many places in the rest of the world.
