15 victories, Max Verstappen achieved his first Grand Chelem at the
age of 23 years, 9 months and 4 days, thus being the oldest driver.
That year he was proclaimed Formula 1 champion after winning the
Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, defeating the defending champion Lewis
Hamilton on the last lap, with whom he had reached the last race.
In March, before starting the 2022 season, Max renewed with Red Bull
until 2028. This year, the team had a car notably superior to the rest.
Verstappen suffered retirements in two of the first three races of the
season, in Bahrain and Australia, where Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc beat
him, but took first place in the championship at the Spanish GP, the
sixth race, which he would never relinquish. At that time, he had four
victories: Saudi Arabia, Emilia-Romagna, Miami and Spain itself. The
Dutch driver won his second title having achieved 15 victories
throughout the season, which is a record in Formula 1. He triumphed in
Azerbaijan and Canada consecutively, before achieving five in a row:
France, Hungary, Belgium (where started from fourteenth position due
to a penalty), Netherlands and Italy.
In October, at the Japanese GP, Max was crowned world champion
with a new victory. He also won in the United States and Mexico and
concluded the season with one more in Abu Dhabi. Finally, he added
454 points, compared to the 308 of Charles Leclerc, who won three
races and was runner-up, while Sergio Pérez was third with 305.
