about cooking and baking. There are plenty of dishes and cakes that you are
imagining right now! But, let me ask you first, are you familiar with the tools and
equipment needed to prepare all that foods? Do you have an idea what tools and
equipment you are going to use if you cook spaghetti, or simple pan cake? Okay
then, let’s dig up first your memory on what you already know by accomplishing

Are you excited now to learn the module? Okay let’s begin by identifying
the types and uses of kitchen tools and equipment
Kitchen tools and paraphernalia are tools used primarily in the kitchen.
These are categorized as preparatory tools, cooking ware and equipment. These are
the tools that kitchen must have for the easy preparation of foods.
Please read the information sheet given below and find out how much you
have remembered and how you have learned by answering the given activity.

Types of Kitchen Tools and Equipment and their Uses
PREPARATORY TOOLS
1. Knife- used to cut ingredients like meat, vegetables
and fish.

2. Cutting board- made of wood or hard plastic
materials use when chopping vegetables or cutting meat.
Use separate chopping boards for meat and vegetables
to avoid contamination.

3. Can opener – used to open cans.

4. Measuring glass- used to measure large quantities of


ingredients like liquid water, oil and vinegar with
fractional parts
(1, ¾, ½, ¼).

5. Measuring spoon- used to measure small quantities of


ingredients in this fractional part (1, ¾, ½, ¼).

6. Measuring cup- used to measure liquid and dry


ingredients.

7. Mixing bowl- This is used to mix, toss and hold your


ingredients.

8. Colander- used to drain excess water in vegetables or


pasta noodles.

9.Vegetable peeler- used to peel vegetables.

10. Wire whisk- used for whipping eggs or batter.

11. Grater- used to grate foods into pieces, like cheese


or root
crops.

12. Kitchen shear- useful in kitchen for cutting
vegetables like alugbati or ampalaya leaves. also
practical for cutting tape, string and remove labels from
the items.

13. Paring knife- used to section or decorates the fruits


and vegetables.

14. Wooden spoon- a ladle made of wood used to mix


or combine
ingredients.

15. Tongs- applicable in flipping hot foods when


grilling.

16. Soup Ladle- large-long-handled spoon. Used for


soups, stews
or stocks.

17. Temperature Scale- used to measure heat intensity


of the
food being cook.

18. Strainer- used to separate liquid and solid


ingredients like
flour and coconut milk.

19. Scraper- made of rubber or silicone used to scrape


or remove
foods from the bowl. You can also use this to turn or
flip eggs
when cooking.

20. Spoon- made of stainless steel or plastic use to
spoon the
liquid or lift the foods out of the pot or eating foods.

COOK WARE AND BAKING WARE


1. Grill pan-used to grill sandwiches or toppings to be
broiled.

2. Large Pot- used when preparing or cooking stocks,


soups and stew.

3. Baking Sheet Pan- a flat rectangular metal pan useful


in roasting and baking foods.

4. Muffin Pan- good for making cupcakes, it comes with


6 or 12 built-in cups.

EQUIPMENT
1. Weighing scale- used to weigh ingredients commonly
flour, sugar, meat and
vegetables.

2. Gas range- equipment used in cooking. You can also
bake a cake in its built
oven.
3. Electric mixer- an equipment used for mixing and
creaming ingredients if you were baking a cake it is
useful in making icing.
4. Blender- This equipment is good in purifying,
liquefying and blending all kinds of foods like fruits and
juices.
5. Microwave oven – a kitchen equipment used to heat
leftover foods.

vegetables to avoid spoilage

7. Freezer- used to hold foods in longer time.

Activity 5. Make it For Me
This activity will help you recognize what are the kitchen tools and equipment
needed when preparing a menu.
Given the recipe, write at least 10 kitchen tools and equipment needed to complete
the task.
Glazed Sweet Potato
Ingredients:
1.8 kg sweet potatoes 2 tbsp. lemon juice
6 tbsp. water 2 tbsp. butter
¾ c light corn syrup or maple syrup ½ tsp. cinnamon
6 tbsp. brown sugar ¼ t salt
8 tbsp. orange juice 1/8 t ground cloves

Procedure:
1. Scrub sweet potatoes. Boil or steam until tender. Do not overcook.
2. Spread the potatoes on a sheet pan to cool.
3. Peel the potatoes when they are cool enough to handle. Cut into uniform
pieces. Arrange in a buttered baking pan.
4. Place water, syrup and sugar in a saucepan. Stir over heat until sugar is
dissolved. Add remaining ingredients and boil mixture to form heavy
syrup.
5. Pour syrup over potatoes.
6. Bake at 350F until potatoes are thoroughly cooked and glazed, about 45-
60 minutes.
