COURSE OBJECTIVES:
The main objectives of this course are to:
1. understand the basic concepts of Machine Learning
2. apply supervised learning algorithms for real time applications
3. apply unsupervised learning algorithms for real time applications
4. learn the concepts of neural networks
5. understand various case studies based on the real time applications of ML techniques

Models, Probabilistic Models, Logic Models, Grouping and Grading, Designing a Learning
System, Types of Learning, Supervised, Unsupervised, Reinforcement, Perspectives and Issues.
UNIT II SUPERVISED LEARNING ALGORITHMS AND ITS APPLICATIONS 9 Hours

Linear Regression Models: Least squares, single & multiple variables, Bayesian linear
regression, gradient descent, Linear Classification Models: Discriminant function – Probabilistic
discriminative model - Logistic regression, Probabilistic generative model – Naive Bayes,
Maximum margin classifier – Support vector machine, Decision Tree, Random forests.
UNIT III UNSUPERVISED LEARNING ALGORITHMS AND ITS APPLICATIONS 9

Model combination schemes, Voting, Ensemble Learning - bagging, boosting, stacking,


Unsupervised learning: K-means, Instance Based Learning: KNN, Gaussian mixture models and
Expectation maximization.
UNIT IV BASIC CONCEPTS OF NEURAL NETWORKS 9

Architectures of Neural Network- Perceptron - Multilayer perceptron- ADALINE-


backpropagation – activation functions- network training – gradient descent optimization –
stochastic gradient descent, error.
UNIT V ML TOOLS AND IMPLEMENTATION 9 Hours

Tools-Python, R, SAS and MATLAB, Applications-Macro-Operators in Planning, Face


Recognition, Natural Language Processing, Banking and Finance, Insurance, Healthcare.
