to a pre-determined thickness.
‘On occasions, other types of glass reinforcements are
introduced to attain certain specific loading requirements.
Cylinders produced by this process exhibit high modulus
of laminate - a property that tells the strength of
materials. Specific gravity of laminate is at the range of
1.5 to 1.76 g/ml.
Tank endcaps on the otherhand, are constructed by open
moulding process with the same laminate construction
method as the tank shell.
Tank shell and endeaps are assembled by joining it with a
pre-determined stacks of a number of glass fiber
reinforcements forming the laminate joint overlays.
Required fittings are then located and fixed to the tank by
hand-lay-up (hlu) in strict adherence to ALWATANI's QA
manual and appropriate international quality codes.
The final step is topcoating with a UV-inhibited topcoat after
passing all the necessary production tests.=

che eyA, This specification is intended to provide information
for bidders in order to understand Fiberglass
Aboveground Storage tanks.
. This specification will describe the Fiberglass
Aboveground storage tank that is in accordance
with ASTM D 3299 and shalll meet the performance
‘specifications of a filament-wound tank and shall
meet all applicable standards and regulatory agency
requirements, including, but not limited to, the
standards and requirements of the following:
C. National Bureau of Standards ( NBS)
D. American Petroleum institute (AP!)
E. American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM)
F. American National Standards Institute (ANS!)
Standards
‘A. Standards for Fiberglass Aboveground storage
tank, including: manholes, fittings, lifting lugs, and
ladders.
B. ASTM D 3299
C. ASTM D 2583
D. ASTM D 2584
E. ASTM D 3567
F, BS 4904
Tank Design Requirements
Tank shall meet the following design criteria:
+ Internal Loads
Tank shall withstand 3-5 psig hydrostatic
pressure test with 5:1 safety factor;
+ Tank shall be designed to support accessories such
as ladder, fll pipe, drain, and outlet.
Product Storage Requirements
1. All tanks must be vented, Tanks are designed for
operation at atmospheric pressure only, except for
use with vapor recovery system, provided the
pressure or vacuum does not exceed 1 psig
2. Tanks shall be capable of storing liquids with specific
gravity up to 1.4.
Tank Fabrication Materials
4. Resin
The resin system to be used is a commercial grade,
unsaturated polyester resin system. It contains NO
FILLERS, DYES, PIGMENTS, or COLORANTS - as
per ASTM D 3299 specifications.
* The choice of appropriate resin system to be used
is a responsibilty of the tank designer and shall be
thoroughly discussed with the manufacturer prior
to production.
2. Reinforcing Materials
Reinforcing materials to be used are combinations of
continuous roving, chopped strand mat and woven
roving of the "E” type glass. innermost layer in contact
with the stored liquid shall be reinforced with a surface
viel of the “C’ glass type.
Polyester resin is the most widely used resin type for
reinforcement with fiberglass. Three distinct stages are
involved in the manufacture of a fully cured polyester resi
First, an unsaturated polyester is manufactured by chemical
reaction between organic acids, normally a combination of
saturated and unsaturated dibasic acids, and a cihydrie
glycol. The second stage is to dissolve the unsaturated
resin in a monomer solvent, usually styrene, making it fui
Finally, in the laminating stage, a catalyst and sometimes
‘an accelerator is added to the fluid resin. A cross linking
reaction takes place between the monomer solvent
molecules and the double bonds of the unsaturated cis to
form the fully cured polyester resin. By varying the proportions
‘of the componenents, and by using different acids and
glycols, the properties of the finished polyester are altered.
‘Other resins which are often reinforced with fiberglass
include:
Epoxide resins, which are linear polymers made by
condensing epichiorohydrin with polyhydroxy compounds,

Yet another ambitious endeavour was established in 1999 when the Polymer Concrete Division starled
operation. It produces a complete range of polymer concrete pipes, fittings, and manholes for the sewer
system. Currently, the company is supplying simultaneously a number of aa for the country's
sewerage requirements ee
The manufacturing facility now covers 100,000 sq. meters and is fully equipped with state of the art
technologies and machineries. The GRP Division is equipped with filament-winding (helical & cross-
helical winding patterns-PLC controlled), spray-up, RTM, and hand laminating machines, and is capable
of producing large cylinders of up to 4250mm diameter with lengths of up to 12 meters.
It also manufactures UL-listed GRP underground fuel storage tanks from 4,000 liters to 120,000 liters.
