Introduction to wireless communication and mobile
computing
 Wireless communication involves the transmission of information
over a distance without the help of wires, cables or any other forms
of electrical conductors.
 Wireless communication is a broad term that incorporates all
procedures and forms of connecting and communicating between
two or more devices using a wireless signal through wireless
communication technologies and devices.
 Wireless communication is the transfer of information between
two or more points without the use of an electrical conductor,
optical fiber or other continuous guided medium for the
3 transfer.
Can't…
 The most common wireless technologies use radio waves.

 Wireless is a term used to define telecommunication and data

transmission without wires.

 wireless network is a grouping, or network, of multiple devices

where data is sent and received over radio frequencies.

 Wireless Communication is a method of transmitting information

from one point to other, without using any connection like wires,
cables or any physical medium.

 Generally, in a communication system, information is transmitted

from transmitter to receiver that are placed over a limited distance.

4
Can't…
 Wireless Communication, the transmitter and receiver can be placed
anywhere between few meters (like a T.V. Remote Control) to few
thousand kilometers (Satellite Communication).
 Communication Systems can be Wired or Wireless and the medium used
for communication can be Guided or Unguided.
 In Wired Communication, the medium is a physical path like Co-axial
Cables, Twisted Pair Cables and Optical Fiber Links etc. which guides the
signal to propagate from one point to other.
 Such type of medium is called Guided Medium. On the other hand,

Wireless Communication doesn’t require any physical medium but

propagates the signal through space. Since, space only allows for signal
transmission without any guidance, the medium used in Wireless
Communication is called Unguided Medium.
5
Mobile Computing
 Mobile simple describes a computing device that is not restricted to

a desktop.

 Mobile device may be a PDA a “smart” cell phone, a laptop

computer, or any one numerous other devices that allow the user to
complete computing task without being connected to a any
network.

 Mobile computing refers to the set of IT technologies, products,

services and operational strategies and procedures that enable end

users to access computation, information and related resources and

6 capabilities while mobile.

Can't…
 Mobile Computing refers a technology that allows transmission
of data, voice and video via a computer or any other wireless
enabled device.
 It is free from having a connection with a fixed physical link. It
facilitates the users to move from one physical location to another
during communication.
 Mobile Computing technology that you can access and transmit
data from any remote locations without being present there
physically. Mobile computing technology provides a vast
coverage diameter for communication.
7
Can't…
The concept of Mobile Computing can be divided into three parts:
 Mobile Communication
 Mobile Hardware
 Mobile Software

Mobile Communication is the use of technology that allows us to

communicate with others in different locations without the use of any
physical connection (wires or cables).
Communication can be divided in the following four types:
 Fixed and Wired
 Fixed and Wireless
 Mobile and Wired
 Mobile and Wireless
8
Can't…
 Fixed and Wired: In Fixed and Wired configuration, the devices are fixed
at a position, and they are connected through a physical link to
communicate with other devices.
For Example, Desktop Computer.
 Fixed and Wireless: In Fixed and Wireless configuration, the devices are
fixed at a position, and they are connected through a wireless link to make
communication with other devices.
For Example, Communication Towers, WiFi router
 Mobile and Wired: In Mobile and Wired configuration, some devices are
wired, and some are mobile. They altogether make communication with
other devices.
For Example, Laptops.
9
Can't…
 Mobile and Wireless: In Mobile and Wireless configuration, the devices

can communicate with each other irrespective of their position. They can
also connect to any network without the use of any wired device.
For Example, WiFi Dongle.

 Mobile hardware consists of mobile devices or device components that

can be used to receive or access the service of mobility. Examples of

mobile hardware can be smart phones, laptops, portable PCs, tablet PCs,
Personal Digital Assistants, etc.

 Mobile software is a program that runs on mobile hardware. This is

designed to deal capably with the characteristics and requirements of

mobile applications.
10
Types of Services
Types of Wireless/Mobile Computing Technologies
 GSM (Global System of Mobile communication)

 CDMA (Code Division Multiple Access)

 GPRS (General Packet Radio Services)

 SMS (Short Message Service)

What are the wireless services?

 Wireless service means any commercial mobile radio service, wireless
service, common carrier wireless exchange service, cellular service,
personal communications service (PCS), specialized mobile radio service,
paging service, wireless data service, or public or private radio dispatch
service.
11
Can't…
What are the services of mobile computing?
 Application services include wide-area wireless voice telephone,
mobile Internet access, video calls and mobile TV, all in a
mobile environment.
What is various types of services of wireless communication?
 There are different types of wireless communication devices like
mobiles. Cordless telephones, Zigbee wireless technology, GPS,
Wi-Fi, satellite television, and wireless computer parts.
 Current wireless phones include 3 and 4G networks, Bluetooth,
and Wi-Fi technologies.
12
Wireless vs. Mobile Communication
 Mobile simply describes a computing device that is not restricted to a

desktop.

 A mobile device may be a PDA (Personal Digital Assistant), a Smart

cell phone, a laptop computer, or any one of numerous other devices

that allows the users to complete computing tasks without being
tethered or connected to a network.

 Mobile is a word that is commonly used to describe portable devices.

 A mobile device is one that is made to be taken anywhere. Therefore,

it needs an internal battery for power, and must be connected to a

modern mobile network that can help it to send and receive data
13 without attaching to a hardware infrastructure.
Can't……
 Wireless refers to the method of transferring information between a

computing device, such as a personal Digital assistant (PDA), and a

data source, such as an agency database server, without a physical
connection. However, not all wireless communications technologies
are created equally, offer the same uses or are even mobile.

 Wireless refers to the method of transferring information between a

computing device and a data source, without a physical connection.

 Mobile computing refers to computing devices that are not

restricted to a desktop. Wireless computing is simply data

communication without the use of a landline.
14
Issues occurred in Mobile Computing
here is a lot of advantage of using Mobile computing technology. But, along
with these advantages, you can face following is a list of issues.
 Costly due to Wireless Medium

 Issue due to Device Mobility

 Security Issues in Mobile Computing

 Physical Security or Data Security

 System Security or Network Security

These issues can be resolved by using some common tactics. These issues
are:
 Using VPN technology

 Using Cryptography & Network Security in your project

 Use of Firewall technology in the project
