Assessment task 3
My Concept
My concept is about a young mermaid named Evelyn who is neglected since birth by her mother. Her
mother revolves her whole life around Aurora, the sister. She then has an idea to venture off onto
land. Evelyn struggles to stand and finds two tourists near the beach; she approaches them with
curiosity and a friendly face but is turn down by tourist 2, which then proceeds to call her ugly.
Evelyn sits down and starts to cry when a mysterious old woman lightly taps her on the shoulder. She
is startled by this and said that it is nothing to worry about it. The mysterious woman knows exactly
what she is going through and states “Worth” is not a person; it is something you must find in
yourself. She quickly disappears. Aurora and their mother finds and calls out to Evelyn. Aurora pleads
for Evelyn to come back home but Evelyn refuses. This then ends with Evelyn walking off and
Aurora looking down in regret and sadness.

Theme: Magical Realism

Dramatic Meaning: The dramatic meaning is finding your self-worth in yourself and to not
care what other people think about you. Stand up to the people who have done you wrong.

Evelyn, a young mermaid is trying to find this so-called person named “Worth” but then later
discovers that worth is something you find in yourself by a mysterious old lady. Later on her
sister and mother find her and tells her to come home with them for her sister’s 18 th birthday
but Evelyn refuses. It ends with Aurora looking guilty, Evelyn walking off stage and their mother
calling out to Aurora.

The key elements that I used to manipulate are the relationship, focus and tension. In the first
scene their mother calls Evelyn to run an errand for Aurora for her 18th birthday party. Evelyn is
standing in confusion as it is her birthday as well (Aurora and Evelyn are twins). Then, Evelyn is
immediately called out for being bratty, trying to go against their orders. This shows how the
relationship between the mother and Evelyn. What I used to use focus is by setting the lighting
only on Aurora when Evelyn says, “I never shared the same spotlight as her”. This shows focus
by having the attention only on Aurora, also emphasising on Evelyn’s words. Aurora’s wrist is
grabbed by their mother’s hand ordering her to follow her back out into the ocean but Aurora
refuses. This gets their mother mad causing the audience wondering what will happen next.

The magical realism convention used in my story is non-human characters. Evelyn, Aurora and
their mother are all mermaids who can transform into humans on land but only once they are
dry. Evelyn is constantly called out on her hair being blue which she starts to believe and loss
her identity. The mysterious old woman comes up to Evelyn and gives her a talk about finding
self-worth in herself and “Worth” is not a real person. This is a scene that really emphasises on
the dramatic meaning, which is clear and gives a direct message to the audience.
