Plato’s Metaphysical Argument

 Soul : by nature simple & indivisible; Body : divisible & complex

 Very nature of Soul is life whereas that of Body is death : as life is
incompatible with death
 Simply, Soul never dies, it is body which dies
 Hence Soul is immortal !

 Criticism : Few questions remained unexplained by Plato like-

 How Soul is simple?
 How life & death co-exist together i.e. soul & body?

Plato’s Epistemological Argument
 Soul : knower, base of knowledge
 All knowledge is innate in Soul, it exists prior to birth
 Such knowledge awakens only when external situations are encountered
through senses
 This is Doctrine of Reminiscence i.e. Recollection

 Criticism : Plato didn’t answer –

 How Soul attained all the knowledge?
