AWARNESS ABOUT CERVICAL CANCER

A seminar was organized by Annasaheb Vartak College to educate the youth on cervical
cancer and its prevention. This topic was discussed by a medical professional; Dr. Hollis
D’Souza (MD, DM; Medical Oncologist). This program was conducted by Department of
Biotechnology and the moderators were Prof. Joya Gonsalves & Prof. Sadhana Purkait from
Biotechnology Department. It was held on 25th January 2023 at Rajani Hall of Vartak
College.
Dr. Hollis started the seminar by giving a brief introduction about cancer and importance
of cervix. Later, he stated the cervical cancer is 2nd most common cancer occurred in females
after breast cancer. Compendious facts about the symptoms and causes of cervical cancer
were explained among which infection with Human papillomavirus (HPV) has high potential
to cause such type of abnormal cell growth in the cervix region. The HPV which is
transmitted by epithelial (skin or mucosal) surfaces enter the body so it was advised to keep
overall hygiene in check.
To prevent this cancer Dr. D’Souza, suggest a list of vaccines available in India which could
make body immune to HPV and among which Nonavalent vaccine was highly recommended.
Further, he added that the vaccine can be used on females from age of 9 – 26, which might
vary according to vaccine. The misconception about this treatment that it causes infertility
was busted.
Finally, the number of queries by audience about related topic were answered by Dr.
Hollis and the seminar was successfully concluded educating the upcoming generation about
this medical condition.
