Standard Method of Test for Resistance of Concrete to Chloride Ion Penetration 1. SCOPE, 1.1 This method covers the determ- ‘ation of the resistance of concrete speci- ‘ens to the penetration of chiorée ion eis intended for use in determining the effects of variations in the propeniss of ‘concrete on the resistance ofthe concrete to chloride ion penetration. Variations in ‘he concrete may include, but are not limited te, changes in the cement ype and content, watercement ratio, aggre fnte type and proporions, admixtures, leatments, curing and consolidation, This test method is not intended to pro- vide a quantitative measure ofthe length ‘of service that may be expected from 2 specific ype of concrete 1.2 The values stated in SI units are te be regarded as the standard 2. TEST SPECIMENS 2.4 The specimens for use in this test shall be slabs made and cured in sccordance with the applicable require. ments of T 126, “Making and Curing Concrete Test Specimens in the Labor: NOTE 1—This method contemplates the se of & minimem of four apesznens foreach foaluaton wih each sab aot fest than 7S ‘um (3 in.) thick ane 300 mam (13 i) aguare 2.2 For this tes the specimens shall be removed from moist euring a 14 ays of ape unless earlier removal is ecommended by the manufscturer of a Special concrete. The specimens shall then be stored until 28 days of age in a ‘toying room of the type specified by T 4160, Length Change of Cement Mortar and Concrete 2.3 When the test method is used to value conercte testments, the slabs Shall be fabricated from concrete havi 8 AASHTO DESIGNATION: T 259-80 cement factor of 380 kg/m? (658 tbr yO, a waierccemeni ratio mass of 0.3, ‘and an air content of 6 = 1 percent, ‘The concrete treatment shall be ap- plied 21 days of age and in accordance ‘with the manufacturer's recommends: lions for field usage NOTE 2-1 field application f sealer by spraying is recommended, the scaler shouldbe applied wo the specimens by spray Ing rather than brushing 2.4 When a special overlay material is tobe evaluated, the concrete slab shal! be cast 50 mm (2 in) thick using the imix design specified under Section 2.3 ad then the special ovetiay. material shall be placed 25 mm (1 in} thick, Unless specified ctherwice, according to the manufactures’s recommendations, PROCEDURE 3A. Immediately after the specified drying petiod stipulated in Section 22 (ie 25th day of specimen age), 32 = 1.6 mm (0.125 = 0.062 in.) of the stad surface shall be abreded vsing grinding of sandblasting techniques ifthe concrete oF ueatment ate to be subjected to the wearing effect of vehicular uatfic, Ne water shall be used in te abrading pro. ess. If the concrete or weatment if to be used on surfaces not subject to wear from vehicular traffic then the abrading step shall be omitted 32. Place approumately 19 mm (0.75 i.) high by 13 mm (05 in) wide dams around the top edge of all slabs ‘except one, which will then become the contol slab. In liew of this, a dam meet. ing these dimension requirements ‘may bbe cast as an integral past of the slab However, such previously cast dams shall nat interfere with he abrasion ofthe surface at specified under 33. All slabs shall then be retumed to the drying room’ as specified under Stetion 2.2 for an additional 13 days tie nti 42 days of age). NOTE 3—the éepre of sstoration ofthe Specimens atthe time of ponding will affect chose ingress. In genera, water saturated concrete will absorb sigaicaty less ehlon Fe during the 90 daye of ponding than Aer Wt similar materia. Thus. for proper Aefiiion ofcherde ingress by this methog, the requirements in Sections 22 ane 31 through 33 (or 2 toa of 28 days of ait ying rior to ponding) mast be followed 34 The slabs with dams shall be subjected to contiguous ponding with 3 Percent sodium chloride solution 10 Aepth of approximately 13 mm (0.5 in) for 90 days. Glass plates shall be placed ‘over the ponded solutions to retard eva ‘ration ofthe solution. Placement of the lass plates shall not be done in such 3 ‘manner that the surface of the slab is Sealed from the surrounding atmosphere ‘Additional solution shall be added if nee. essary 10 maintain the 13 mm (0.5 in) ‘depth. All slabs shall then be retumed 40 the drying room ss specified under Section 2.2 33. After 90 days of exposure the solution shall be removed from the slabs The slabs shall be allowed to dry and then the surfaces shal be wire brushed ‘onl all salt exystal buildup is com pletely removed. 3.6 Samples forchlarde ion analysis shall then be taken from all slabs in accordance with the procedure deseribed in T 260. These samples shall be ob- tained from each slab at exch of the following depths unless otherwise die rected by the specifying agency. 1.6 mm (0.0625 in) to 13 mm (0 in.) 13 mm (055 in) 10 28 mm (1.0 in) 1239 “The chloride content of each sample shall ‘be determined in accordance with the insuetions ia T 260. (4) the average and maximum absorbed chloride ion valvet calculated in Section 42 for each depth, (5) 2 statement detailing ‘whether ‘or not the surface abrasion de- feribed in Section 3.1 was performed.
