Enter Claudius, Gertrude, Hamlet, Laertes, Ophelius

CLAUDIUS
Though my memories of my dear brother hamlet are still fresh, life doesn’t stop.
We must grieve, but also remain happy.
Today is filled with happiness and sadness. I have married my former sister-in-
law, and made her my wife. I thank you all for advising me to do this and for
accepting my invitation. Cheers to all of us!
*Everyone Cheers*
My dear associate Laertes, what do you want? You said you want to ask me
something.
LAERTES
Sir Claudius, I am going back to France for business. My father has given me
permission.
CLAUDIUS
Sure, Laertes. Go and make us rich. But now, my cousin Hamlet, now my son-

HAMLET
You may be my father now, but I give no affection.

CLAUDIUS
Why are you so gloomy? Are you soaked by the rain?

HAMLET
The sun is warm and radiant.
GERTRUDE
Oh dear daughter, cheer up a little! You can’t spend all day and all night looking at
the ground for your noble father. People, and everything that lives, must die. We
all return from nature to heaven. It is the truth, my dear.

HAMLET
Yes mother, it is truly common.

GERTRUDE
Well, if you know, why does it seem like such an issue for you?

HAMLET
“Seem” mother? I don’t know the meaning of seem. The black clothes I wear, the
tears I shed, the things I see….the voices I hear…all of these seem like grief. But
inside of me, is true grief.

CLAUDIUS
Hamlet, it is sweet of you to mourn your father. But remember, everyone would
lose their father. Your father also lost his father. But mourning and mourning is
foolishness.
If you want to return to Wittenberg, I advise you don’t.

GERTRUDE
Please don’t let my prayers be in vain, Hamlet. Stay with us, and don’t go to
Wittenberg.
HAMLET
I shall obey you the best I could, mother.

CLAUDIUS
What a lovely response! My dear wife, and all of you, come. Let us drink today till
we reach the clouds!

HAMLET

Oh, If only my flesh could evaporate right now, or if suicide wasn’t sin.
Oh God, God! All of this seems worthless, curse it! My father was so loving that he
would not let wind blow on my mother’s face, and yet, no – I should not think
about it.
Only a month after my father’s death….she married my uncle…all this incest…and
treachery…and this pain in my heart…I must remain quiet.

Enter Laertes, Ophelius

LAERTES
My plane is here. Goodbye, brother. Make sure to talk to me.

OPHELIUS
Why, brother?

LAERTES
Hamlet is not for you, brother. She would only break your heart.

OPHELIUS
But brother, I promised I love her dearly, and I know she loves me too.

LAERTES
You’re a fool! Promises are like traps that put you in danger. Ophelius, stop
thinking about Hamlet, and never talk to her ever again. Make sure to obey me,
goodbye.

OPHELIUS
I will obey you, brother.

Enter Hamlet

HAMLET
The freezing air bites so cold…

Enter Horatio

HORATIO
Hello, my good friend Hamlet.

HAMLET

Horatio! Oh, is it good to see you. Why are you not in Wittenberg?

HORATIO
Well, I’m a proud dropout, madam.

HAMLET
Oh, don’t be so harsh on yourself. Why are you here then?

HORATIO
To see your dear father’s funeral.

HAMLET
Don’t mock me for a fool, Horatio. I know you came for the wedding.

HORATIO
Well, I did come for both, they happened to be at the same day.

HAMLET
It’s called being cheap, Horatio. This awful day….My uncle married my mother…
My dear Father! Oh, my father…But I know I should keep silence.

THE DELUSION
Oh, dear Hamlet. Is that true?

HAMLET
Oh, you again! Who is it that speaks to me, and why won’t you go away?

HORATIO
What do you mean, Hamlet?

THE DELUSION
I am here to guide you, dear Hamlet. Must you really stay silent?

HAMLET
I must stay silent! I know I must, and therefore I should.

THE DELUSION
Dear Hamlet, would you let your uncle to that to you, and your mother? His
incestuous, treacherous persona is now your father. Oh, what a damned life!
Would you just let it be this way? Would you stay silent in spite of all this misery?

HAMLET
What is it that you desire?!

HORATIO
Are you alright, Hamlet?

THE DELUSION
You must head to the forest. Someone is waiting for you, dear Hamlet.

HAMLET
Who? Who is it?

HORATIO
Who are you talking to?

THE DELUSION
He stood tall, with an eerie pale complexion, and a face filled with no emotion but
anger.

HAMLET
is it my noble father?

HORATIO
What about your father, Hamlet?

THE DELUSION
No more than your dearest father, dear Hamlet. Even in his death, he wishes to
talk to you, for he loves you the greatest. Go on now, dear Hamlet….

HAMLET
My father’s spirit…This is not good, all is not well! Is it foul play? I must stay calm,
and I would come for you, father!
Hamlet exits rushing
HORATIO
What? Wait up, Hamlet!
Horatio exits, rushing

ACT 1 SCENE 4
Enter Hamlet
HAMLET
Where are you dear father? Let me see you! I am not going any further.
Enter The Ghost
HAMLET
Oh heavens, protect me! Whether you’re a good spirit or an evil demon, I fear I
must speak to you. I’ll call you as my father, so please, speak to me! Tell me why
you have arisen from the tomb, tell me why! Why? What should I do?
GHOST
Listen….to….me….
HAMLET
I will.
GHOST
It is almost time…I return…..to hell….
HAMLET
Oh, no, poor father!
GHOST
Promise….to…avenge my death…my…dear…When you hear my words.
HAMLET
What, my father?

GHOST
I am your father, dear daughter. I am doomed to wander the earth at night.
During the day, I bathe in the lake of fire, until my infinite sins have vanished. If I
weren’t forbidden to tell you the secrets of hell, I would tell you stories that
would damn your soul, and freeze your blood. Listen….Listen….If you loved your
dear father…

HAMLET
Oh…. God, God, what is it …my dear father?

GHOST
Take revenge…for my….murder…

HAMLET
Murder?

GHOST
His awful…foul….murder…

HAMLET
Tell me about it, my dear father, please…

GHOST
Listen….They think that a snake bit me to my death….but that snake is the
one….who married your mother…

HAMLET
My…My Uncle?!

GHOST
Yes, that incestuous beast….He deceived your Mother with lust, greed, and
wickedness….As the sun is soon to shine, I must tell you the truth. When I was
sleeping in the orchard, your uncle poured poison into my ear…He killed me in my
sin...Damning my soul in purgatory….Take revenge for me, but do not hurt your
mother….Goodbye, goodbye. Remember me.

Exit The Ghost

HAMLET
Oh…Everything! Everything is a mess! Remember you? Yes, I will, my father’s
apparition. I’d keep you in my troubled mind the best I can, even if I forget
everything. Oh, my uncle….you villain, villain, damned smiling villain! I will come
for you, as to fulfill my vow….

Enter Horatio, Rushing

HORATIO
Hamlet, Hamlet! Oh, I ran as fast as I could to try and find you. What is the
matter?

HAMLET
Oh, hello there, Horatio. Don’t worry, I am having an amazing time.

HORATIO
If you don’t mind, please tell me why.

HAMLET
Why would I tell you of my secrets? Would you tell of them?

HORATIO
Oh, never, my friend Hamlet.

HAMLET

There’s one snake that has been walking on two feet.

HORATIO
What, a dragon? Are you hunting it? Perhaps, catching it in a ball?

HAMLET
No, Horatio. I saw a ghost. My father’s ghost.

HORATIO
Your dear father?

HAMLET
Yes, my dear father. He said that he was murdered by that incestuous snake my
Mother married.

HORATIO
I’m very sorry about that, dear Hamlet.

HAMLET
Thank you for the sympathy, my dear. But I fear that I am not going to shed more
tears like a simpleton. My heart is filled with rage, one enough to shed blood, be
it my own or someone else’s.

HORATIO
Don’t let your anger control you, dear Hamlet. What are you going to do? Things
can be better.

HAMLET
Don’t worry about me, Horatio. Things can be better once I take matters onto my
own hands. I am going to avenge my father, even if it costs my life. I’ve got to go,
Horatio.

Exit Hamlet

HORATIO
Are you – Wait up, Hamlet! I don’t know the way home!

ACT 2 SCENE 1
Enter Hamlet
THE DELUSION
You heard and saw everything, dear Hamlet. Do what you must to avenge your
father.
HAMLET
Why must all of this happen to me, and to my father? Why did he have to die in
the hands of that snake? Why couldn’t it have been me?

THE DELUSION
To be or not to be, Hamlet?

HAMLET
To be, or not to be? That is the question.
Is it nobler to suffer and fight your troubles, to end them completely?
To die, to sleep, that’s all dying is. To die, to sleep. To sleep, perhaps to dream.
Oh yes, yes. Because those dreams in death, after you left your body, are
something that make you anxious.
Who would bear all these trials and hardships, all this evil, and all this arrogance,
when a single dagger could end it all?
Who would bear the burdens of a tiring life, if they know what happens in death,
where no one returns?
The fear of death makes us all cowards, and weakness is found in much thinking.
But wait, here enters someone!

Enter Ophelius
OPHELIUS
My dear Hamlet, how have you been?

HAMLET
Thanks for asking. I’ve been well, really well.

OPHELIUS
Dear, I have something to return. Something important to you.

THE DELUSION
Do you trust him, dear Hamlet? Must you forget all the things he has done to your
heart?

HAMLET
Oh, what is it- No, I never gave you anything.

OPHELIUS
My dear, you know you did. You wrote me all these sweet letters.

HAMLET
(laughs) Are you serious with these?

OPHELIUS
What? Of course.
HAMLET
Are you a fine gentleman?

OPHELIUS
What do you mean?

HAMLET
You used to be one great puzzle to me, but now I’ve solved it. I used to love you.

OPHELIUS
Yes dear, I also did.

HAMLET
You’re a fool, then. No matter how hard we try, our sinfulness would always come
out. I didn’t love you.

OPHELIUS
I fell for your tricks, then.

HAMLET
Where’s your father?

OPHELIUS
At home, why?
HAMLET
Hope that he gets locked in or he falls off the stairs like a fool, goodbye.

OPHELIUS
What is your problem?

HAMLET
If you marry, marry a fool so that you would cheat with one another. Goodbye,
Goodbye.

OPHELIUS
Oh why? Why? I love you Hamlet! I loved you, I did! You know I did!

ACT 2 SCENE 2

CLAUDIUS
Oh, hello there, my dear wife!
What is the matter?

GERTRUDE
You know, my daughter, Hamlet. She’s changed too much. I’ve heard she has
been acting in madness. Ophelius told me she talked to him in a very
unpredictable and insane manner.

CLAUDIUS
What do you think could be the cause of that madness? I think it’s because of her
unearthly love with that boy.

GERTRUDE
Well…I think it’s nothing more than the main, her father’s death.

CLAUDIUS
Tell me when her madness comes around once more. Her sadness is like an egg,
and whatever hatches would be dangerous. To prevent that, I’ve made a decision
just now. She will be sent to England to do whatever she likes, away from us.
What do you think?

GERTRUDE
It would be for the better.

CLAUDIUS
It shall be. Madness in great ones would not go unwatched.

GERTRUDE
I’ve also come to ask you for something.

CLAUDIUS
What is it?

GERTRUDE
I’ve found this near your things.

CLAUDIUS
Oh, well…don’t touch that!

GERTRUDE
What is it? It’s some kind of fluid.

CLAUDIUS
It’s poison…my dear.

GERTRUDE
Where would you need this kind of poison?

CLAUDIUS
It’s for…….hunting! Hunting. I am trying to get into hunting. Heard that kind of
poison would drop a bear like a fly.

GERTRUDE
Oh, hunting?

CLAUDIUS
Yes, my dear. Now take that back, and go. I have to leave.

GERTRUDE
Where to, my dear?

CLAUDIUS
I need to go. Away now!

GERTRUDE
Alright, my dear!

ACT 2 SCENE 3
Enter Claudius
CLAUDIUS
Oh, a brother’s murder. I can’t pray. But isn’t God’s mercy enough to forgive any
sin? Then I’ll pray. My soul is going to burn in hell, so I would repent as much as I
could. Now, my knees, kneel.
Enter Hamlet

HAMLET
I could do it now, now that he’s praying. I could have my revenge, now.

THE DELUSION
Would you do it now, Hamlet? Now that he’s praying?

HAMLET
I would. He would bleed from the ear.

THE DELUSION
Then his soul would go to heaven.

HAMLET
Heaven? Send him? To Heaven?

THE DELUSION
Heaven. That would do him service, not revenge, Hamlet.

HAMLET
He killed my father full of sin, and now I’m going to kill him while he’s praying?
No! Knife, go away! When he’s drunk, partying, gambling, or in incestuous
pleasure, I’d kill him. Your days are counted, Claudius.

CLAUDIUS
Oh….my words fly up, my thoughts remain below.

ACT 3 SCENE 1
Enter Gertrude
GERTRUDE
It is time I talk to that lady before all goes too far.

HAMLET
(Offstage) Mother! Mother! Mother!

GERTRUDE
Oh, here she comes!

Enter Hamlet
HAMLET
Now mother, what is the matter with you? Why call for me?

GERTRUDE
You have your father much offended by your actions.

HAMLET
Mother, you have my father offended.

GERTRUDE
You answer me like a fool.
HAMLET
You talk like a fool.

GERTRUDE
What is all of this for, Hamlet?! Have you forgotten who I am?!

HAMLET
No, you are your husband’s brother’s wife, and unfortunately, my mother! Now
sit down, and let me wring your heart!

GERTRUDE
What have I done for you to talk to me like that?

HAMLET
Look upon these portraits of two brothers. See him and all the good qualities he
has? This was your husband. Now look at what follows. Do you have eyes?! Ha!?
Do you have eyes?! Your senses are working, aren’t they? What devil tricked you?
Oh shame, why aren’t you blushing now?

GERTRUDE
Oh Hamlet, speak no more! No more, sweet Hamlet!

HAMLET
A murderer, a thief, a villain!

Enter The Ghost

HAMLET
Heavens save me, what do you want me to do, father?

GERTRUDE
Alas, she’s mad!

HAMLET
Have I failed you, dear father?

GERTRUDE
What is happening to you, dear Hamlet? Oh my sweet daughter, ease your anger!
What are you staring at?

HAMLET
On him! On him….

GERTRUDE
Who are you talking to? I see nothing at all!

HAMLET
Look there! Look how he goes away! My Father!

Exit The Ghost

GERTRUDE
This is all in your mind, all from madness.

HAMLET
Madness? My heart beats the same as yours. The problem is not my madness, but
your crime. Forgive me but, you must confess your sins, repent to what you’ve
done.

GERTRUDE
You have broken my heart, Hamlet.

HAMLET
Then throw away the worse part. Do not fall for Claudius’ lust.

GERTRUDE
What should I do?

HAMLET
Do not let the beast seduce you ever again. Believe that I am not crazy, but am
just pretending to be.

GERTRUDE
Trust me my daughter, I would not tell anyone what you have said.
HAMLET
Good night, mother.

ACT 3 SCENE 2
Enter Hamlet, Claudius
CLAUDIUS
Hamlet, for all that you have done, I must send you away. Prepare yourself, your
flight is ready. Everything is set for England.

HAMLET
For England?

CLAUDIUS
Yes, Hamlet.

HAMLET
Very good.

CLAUDIUS
Yes it is, and you know why.

HAMLET
Off to England I go! Farewell, dear mother.

CLAUDIUS
Your father, Hamlet.
HAMLET
My mother. Father and mother is man and wife, man and wife is one flesh, and
so, you’re my mother. Away I go!

Hamlet Exits
CLAUDIUS
Finally, that insane lady is gone. She is set to be killed upon arrival, everything is
going into plan.
