CHAPTER ONE

WHAT IS CONTENT WRITING?

Before we delve into content writing, it is expedient to explain the two words that have
turned into a song on the lips of every online marketing institute.

Content means different things to different people. Some regard content as a state of
satisfaction with what you have while some people define it as what is contained in a
material such as coke in a bottle.

In this context, Content is any piece of information created and published online with a
goal and an end-user in mind. It can be images, texts, audio, or videos.

In this age, everybody creates or consumes content daily whether consciously or

unconsciously. A day can't pass without doing either of the two. Most times, you do the
two.

Content is the Facebook posts you read or post; the WhatsApp status you view; the
Instagram and Facebook reels; the tweets on the bird app; the emails you receive
daily(many of which you've never opened); the videos you watch on Netflix or Youtube;
the books you've read(academics, stories, personal development); the answers to the
questions you ask on Google; and many more are all content. Virtually everything you
come across is content.

Writing on the other hand is a form of communication in which you use symbols
(alphabets, numbers, spaces, punctuation) to express your thoughts, feelings, and ideas.

Having defined these two basic terms, let's define content writing. Content writing can
be defined as a process that involves ideation, writing, editing, and publishing content in
written format with a definite goal and a target audience in mind.

2
CHAPTER TWO
WHY THE CLAMOUR ABOUT CONTENT WRITING?
You may have asked, "What is really the clamour about Content Writing, and why is
everybody writing content?" But you may have never gotten an answer to this question.

Content writing is the most used format for content creation. About 98% of online
businesses use it to showcase their products and services to their audience. Without any
contradiction, content writing is a strong pillar for the success of any business in this
digital age. Here are some of the reasons why content writing is important:

1. It helps in creating brand awareness

The success of any business or organization is determined by its ability to project itself
to the public. People need to know what you are doing if they will ever purchase your
product or ask for your services.

To create awareness about your products and services, you need to create content about
them. With content writing, people will know what you are doing, why you are doing it,
and how you are doing it. It will project you in the face of over 5 billion people using the
internet today which is about 63% of the world's population.

Well-written content is the easiest way to reach more people. Traditional forms of
advertising or the use of word-of-mouth advertising can't do in 100 years what engaging
and valuable content can do in 1 year. Try it out and come and share your testimony with
me.

2. It attracts your target audience

You need to understand this basic truth that everyone is not your target audience. You
need to differentiate between an audience and a target audience.

An audience is someone who reads your content while a target audience is someone
who reads your content and needs it to solve a problem in their life.

Creating good content will help you sieve your target audience from your target
audience. Then you can concentrate your energy on building relationships with your
target audience.

3
3. It nurtures your audience
I will use the planting of seeds to drive home my point here. Before the rainy season, the
farmer is expected to have a seed and once the rain begins to fall, he goes to the farm to
plant his seeds. However, the farmer doesn't sit back at home and wait until harvest time.
No. He goes to his farm from time to time to check his plants, uproots the weeds,
irrigates if there is no rain, and also redresses them. He keeps nourishing the plants until
the time of their harvest.

Now, you need to see your target audience as a seed that you need to nourish until the
time they will take your desired action.
You nourish your audience and develop a rapport with them through written content that
solves their problems and answers their questions. This will enable them to know you,
like you, trust you and value you.

4. It helps to convert your audience to customers

The goal of any business is to make money. If this is not your goal then you need to stop
your business right now and find another thing to do or recalibrate your mindset.

People are not morons, so you shouldn't expect them to buy whatever you are selling
because you are the one selling it.

Just imagine I saw a lady on the road and got attracted to her beauty. Then I rushed into a
shop to purchase a ring for her and ran after her like an athlete running to get the gold
medal.

I was fortunate to meet her and I knelt to propose to her. What would be her reaction? I'm
sure you already know the answer. It will be the greatest disgrace of my life.

This is the same thing you do when you tell people to buy your products and services
without first building a relationship with them using valuable content.

Before anyone will buy from you, they need to know you, like you, trust you, and value
you. Once these 4 things are achieved they will buy whatever you sell to them no matter
what it is. They will become your customers and even beg you with their money.

However, this won't happen in a split second, you need to write content regularly to
achieve this.

4
5. It retains your customers
Retention of a customer is more important than the acquisition of a customer because
those customers are easier to convince to buy your new products and also help to do
word-of-mouth advertising for you.

Customer retention can be done by delivering content that resonates with them from
time to time. It will keep them informed that you are still in business and you cherish
them more than their money. You can write "How To" content and useful tips that align
with your brand goals.

6. It positions you as an authority in your niche

To become an authority in your niche, you need to write informative and educational
content. This will keep you on top of your audiences' mind. It will make you an expert
that they will always run to whenever they are convinced because they know the kind of
values you offer through your content.

Many people have expressed their struggles with reading or writing to me because they
have read my content and regard me as an authority that has a solution to their problems.
That's what content writing does for you.

The single reason you always make use of Google when given an assignment or
confused is that you see it as an authority that will provide authentic answers to your
heart-aching questions.

7. It expands your brand

When you write and share valuable contents, people that found it useful will share it
with their audience without asking them to do so. This expands your brand and the
number of target audiences.

This has happened to me many times. Once I share my content, another person will
share it with his(her) audience, and I begin to receive an influx of requests from people
seeking to connect with me because of the value they got from reading my content.

5
CHAPTER THREE
DISTINGUISHING QUALITIES OF A GOOD CONTENT
As I wrote earlier, everyone writes content whether consciously or unconsciously.
Statistics reveal that about 4 million blog posts are published every day.

However, many people are yet to know the qualities of good content that will make their
content stand out from the tons of content published online today. If you are in this
category, then you need to pay keen attention to the 7 qualities I will share with you in
this book.

It will make your content stand out among the millions of content published daily and
also make your readers take your desired action.

1. It must be reader-friendly
Before using your pen to write or type on your phone, you need to understand that you
aren't writing any content to impress yourself but your audience. Therefore, your
content should be written to suit the taste of your readers. A reader-friendly content is
free of jargon and fluf
words, comprehensive, concise, well-spaced, and void of grammatical and spelling
errors.

2. It must be audience-specific
One of the distinguishing features of good content from ordinary content is its ability to
address a specific audience. If you succeeded in writing content for everybody to
consume then you have succeeded in writing content for nobody. Everybody is not your
target audience, so you can't write content for everybody. Know your audience and
create content for them. I will teach you how to create content for a specified audience in
one of the chapters in this book.

3. It must be original
Over 4 million blog posts are published everyday, so it is very easy to search the internet
for content, copy, paste on your brand page, and claim authorship. However, this will do
you more harm than good. Apart from the fact that it is plagiarism and punishable under
the law, it also creates an impression on your audience that you can't be trusted. Instead
of doing this, follow the techniques I will be sharing in this book to craft your unique and
original content in your brand voice that satisfies your audience.

6
4. It must be valuable
Having the ability to write content is not enough, you must write content that adds value
to your readers. You need to write content that gives them more value than they expect
and makes them shout, "wow!" Trust me, they will keep on coming to read your content
because no one hates anything that adds value to their life.

Never allow "showing up daily" to be your drive to write content. Before you write any
content, ask yourself, "Will this content render any value to my audience?" If yes,
continue writing and follow the 10 step-by-step processes for writing valuable and
engaging content I will share with you in this book. If your answer is no, then don't write
the content.

5. It must be engaging and personalized

Engaging and personalized content is what makes the readers glued to reading. To do
this, you need to strike an emotional connection between your reader and your content.
Emotional content has been proven to perform better, in fact, 2X better than statistical
content. Let them know that you understand their plights, fears, and pains, and most
importantly, let them understand that you have a solution to their problem right from the
beginning of your content.

Also, personalize your content by using the power of "You" that is, the second point of
view. It works like magic. If you notice, this is what I have been using from the
beginning of this book. It engages your audience and carries them along to your desired
destination.

6. It must be compelling
Can you remember my definition of content writing? If you have forgotten, I will
remind you. Content writing is a process that involves ideation, writing, editing, and
publishing content in written format with a definite goal and a target audience in mind.
Our emphasis now is, a "definite goal."

Any content you are writing must be able to compel your reader to take the action you
want them to take so that your goal will be achieved. If your content can't do this, then
you have succeeded in wasting your time in writing content

7. It must be consistent with your brand message

Your brand message is how your brand communicates why you exist, the problems you
solve, and who you help. This helps to determine your audiences' perception of you.
Hence, every piece of content you write must align with your brand's message. You can't
be a Christian blog and be writing X-rated, it doesn't align with your brand message..

7
CHAPTER FOUR
10 STEP-BY-STEP PROCESSES FOR CONTENT WRITING

Over time, I have heard people complain that content writing is a difficult task to
perform. The harder they try, the harder it becomes. So they gave up on writing content.
They conclude, "Content writing is not for me." Maybe you are even amongst them and
that's why you are reading this book to learn how to write valuable and engaging
content.

I understand your struggles but that assertion is a lie, that's why I wrote this book for
you. Content writing is not hard and it is for you. The survival and prosperity of your
brand(business) depend on it. So, clear those thoughts from your mind right now and
follow these 10 step-by-step processes I will be teaching in this book. If you follow
these processes duly, I guarantee that you will never find it difficult to write content.

There are exercises after each step that you need to do every time you want to write
content.

1. Create your brand message

Before launching into content writing, the first thing you need to do is to create your
unique brand message. Your brand message is what will make you stand out from your
competitors and directs what you do and what you don't do online.

To create it, use my easy 3W.H formula:

W - Who are you?
W - Who do you help?
W - What do you do?
H - How do you help them?

For instance:
✅ If you are a Content Marketer
I am a Content Marketer. I help brands increase their visibility and profitability through
valuable and engaging content.

✅ If you are a Fashion designer

Have you ever wanted to attend an Owanbe in your Aso ebi and get every eye looking at
you? Then our brand is the satisfaction to your cravings. We help you look gorgeous in
your Aso ebi and attract your audience's attention.

Using the 3W.H formula, craft your unique brand message

2. Define Your Goal

After you craft your brand message, the next thing you need to do is define why you
want to create the content. Your purpose may be to entertain, inspire, inform, educate, or
persuade them to take action. Ensure you choose a goal at a time.

To explain this further, you may decide to create content to inform them about the latest
trends; educate them on how to do something, let's say how to obtain your visa to
Canada, how to make a Facebook Ad; or persuade them to buy what you are selling.

Exercise
Write the goal you want your content to achieve. Remember, one goal at a time.

3. Define Your Target Audience

It is not enough to define your goal, you need to define your audience too–your readers
as a content writer.

You can define your audience by creating a buyer persona(avatar). A buyer persona is a
semi-fictional representation of your ideal customer based on real data.

To create a buyer persona, you need to be able to think from your audiences' perspective.
You should be able to define what they value, their age range, location, mindset, income,
etc. This will determine your language and content structure.

9
Exercise
Using this formula, create your buyer persona.

Name:

Age:

Location:

Goals:

Challenges:

Habits:

Active social media channels and their engagement time:

Language:

Income:

4. Choose your topic

Now you know why and who you want to create content for, the next thing to do is to
choose a topic. Your topic must meet three basic criteria:

● It must be relevant to your brand. You can't be a relationship coach and be creating
content on football. It can't work.
● It must be specific. Your topic mustn't be too broad or vague.
● It must be a present necessity. It must be what your audience needs. It must be able
to answer their questions and provide solutions to their problems.

Exercise
Write the topic you want to develop content on. It doesn't have to be perfect. You can
always amend it after you develop your content.

____________________________________________________________________
________________________________________________________

5. Brain dump
To carry out this step successfully, you need to have a piece of paper and a pen or your
phone's notebook. It all depends on your preference.

10
Think about the topic and write anything that comes to your mind. It might be some
words or sentences. Don't worry about how disjointed it is, just write them down as it
flows from your mind.

Don't pressurize yourself while doing this. This process may last for some days. You
may be in the bathroom and something will drop in your mind, find a way to write it so
that you won't forget. You may be gisting and you will get inspired, ensure you write
them down.

Exercise
Take a break and brain dump on your chosen topic.

____________________________________________________________________
____________________________________________________

6. Explore for more information and ideas

The truth is that you can never know enough about any subject. You need to explore for
more information and ideas from external sources.

After brainstorming, take a step further in seeking ideas and information from other
sources. It may be a book, Google, Social Media, questionnaires, YouTube, Quora,
AnswerthePublic, etc.

When doing this, take note of important information that relates to your content and
write them down because you will need them.

Exercise
Use your phone or system now to research what you want to create content on and write
the important points.

____________________________________________________________________
____________________________________________________

7. Write!
This is the most important step of all the steps. All other steps will amount to nothing if
you don't create the content.

After you've got an idea of what you want to write about, brainstormed, and researched,
the next thing you need to do is to write using your preferred tool whether a phone or
biro and paper.

11
Don't be too perturbed by the word count. It doesn't count; what matters most is the
value of the content.

In the next chapter, you'll learn how you can write your content from start to finish using
the HIB2C formula.

Exercise
It's time to perform your task of writing. So, start writing.

____________________________________________________________________
____________________________________________________

8. Edit and proofread

Once you are done writing, ensure you proofread and edit it to prevent errors, and also
ensure that the content is in sync.

As a writer, I would suggest that you read aloud, reread and edit your content at least
three times. Some tools such as Grammarly and Hemingway Editor can help you to do
this.

When editing, take note of the following:

· Spelling mistakes
· Punctuation mistakes
· Subject-verb agreement
· Improper use of conjunctions and prepositions
· Consistency of tone and tenses
· Consistency of point of view

9. Publish!!!
There is always this fear of publishing your content after you are done writing. You are
afraid your audience may not like it. You are afraid of making mistakes and getting
attacked because of your blunder.

An inner voice will tell you, "Don't publish because no one is ready to read from you."
These kinds of experiences are real. I experienced it for several months before I broke
loose from it.

The truth is, if you are waiting for perfect content, you can't get it. You learn as you
practice and through this consistent act of practice, you improve. So, get your content
out there.

12
Decide the platform you want to publish on and publish it! The platform you will use is
dependent on the content format and the location of your audience.
If your audience is on WhatsApp, then that's the platform you should publish on. If you
have their email addresses and they are active, then publish your content using your
email.

Exercise
Choose your most preferred platforms and publish your content

10. Promote
Here is where a lot of content writers make a big mistake. They stop as soon as they
publish their content, and in the end, they complain of having low engagements.

Who is to be blamed? No one, but the content writer. You don't publish your content and
go and sleep, expecting to come back with massive engagements. It doesn't work that
way.

You need to promote your content to your audience and make them aware of it. If you
don't blow your trumpet, no one else will.

Content promotion can be done organically or by using paid ads. The choice of which
one to use depends on you.

Exercise
Choose your preferred method of promoting your content – organically or paid ads, or
both – and promote your content until it reaches your target audience.

13
CHAPTER FIVE
THE HIB2C FORMULA

Everyone using social media writes; we all express ourselves through the use of text.
But it is quite unfortunate that there is so much junk and bad content out there.

It sucks when I see how people write badly, even the so-called writers and writing
coaches. I'm lost for words many times.

You see, whether you want to be a writer or not, the art of writing must be learned by
everyone in this century. It becomes more important if you want to build a writing career
or become an author.

The purpose of this book is to share with you a simple formula you can always make use
of whenever you want to write.

We will be using a very simple formula: HIB2C

H - means Headline
I - mean Introduction
B - means Body of Content
C - means Conclusion
C - means Call to action

We will be discussing each of the letters one after the other:

Headline
The headline is the most important part of your content. It will determine whether your
audience will read your content or not. Miss it and lose your audiences' attention; get it
right and attract many people to read your content. The choice is yours!

David Ogilvy said, “On average, five times as many people read the headline as read the
body copy. When you've written your headline, you've spent eighty cents out of your
dollar.” This is to explain the importance of a headline.

Your headline must grab the readers' attention and force them to read your content. It
must be captivating and intriguing and make them feel as if they would miss a great
opportunity if they don't read your content.

14
To be able to craft your headline you must understand your audiences' persistent
problem or challenges and present them with an immediate solution to this problem.
Here are three easy templates you can use to write a headline:

1. How to AAA in BBB even if CCC

AAA - Your audience goal
BBB - Timeframe
CCC - your audience challenges or pain point

E.g
I. How to Lose 6Kg of Weight in 1 Month even if You Hate Going to the Gym

II. How to Earn 100 Dollars in One Week even if You Have Never Earn $10 Before

2. Do you Know you can BBB without AAA

AAA - The desired goal
BBB - Challenges

E.g.
I. Do You Know You Can Earn on Amazon Without Writing a Book
II. Do You Know You Can Publish a Book Without Writing?

3. AAA Reason Why You Are BBB?

AAA - Number
BBB - Challenges or pain points

E.g
I. 7 Reasons Why You are Broke
II. 10 Reasons Why You are Failing in All You Do

Exercise
Choose the headline you want to use and write it.
____________________________________________________________________
____________________________________________________________

Introduction
After you grab your readers' attention with your headline, you need to make them
continue reading your content, and this is what your introduction helps you do.

15
How do you write your introduction?
1. Ask an intriguing question
2. Make a big promise
3. Tell a story
4. A general statement that captures all you will discuss in your content
5. Quotes from a reputable person
6. Use statistics

Excercise
Write your introduction using any of the tips mentioned above. You can combine one or
two of them and use them together, but let it be short. Just ensure you grab your reader
and make them continue reading.
____________________________________________________________________
____________________________________________________________________

Content
Here is where you deliver all you promised your readers through your headline and
introduction. You must ensure that you deliver just as you promised, hence they will
never read your contents again.

Your content must be able to answer the questions they intend to ask, meet and exceed
their expectations, and leave them "wowed."

Important tips when writing your content

● Go straight to the point
● Imagine yourself speaking to a friend
● Make use of whitespaces
● Use short sentences
● Ensure your sentences flow easily i.e. it is well arranged
● Speak the language of your reader
● Use bullets when necessary
● Reemphasize your topic
● Punctuate correctly

Exercise
Write the body of your content. Ensure you implement the tips I shared above.
____________________________________________________________________
____________________________________________________________________

16
CONCLUSION
Your conclusion is a summary of all you've discussed in the content. Reemphasize your
points clearly because it's not all your audience that will read the body of your content.
However, with a clear and concise conclusion, they will still get your message.

Exercise
Insert your conclusion here. Remember, it must be short.
____________________________________________________________________
____________________________________________________

CALL TO ACTION
A call to action is a clear instruction you add to your content to instruct them to take the
desired action. You must tell your readers what to do next. Don't assume that they should
know what to do next. Tell them what you want them to do. To like, subscribe, share,
comment, click, etc. Tell them!

Exercise
Have you decided on the Call to Action you want to use? Write it here.

The steps are simple, right? That's the purpose of this book. That's why I titled it Content
Writing Manual: An Easy and Effective Guide to Writing Valuable and Engaging
Content.

CHAPTER SIX
HONING YOUR CONTENT WRITING SKILL

As I said earlier, content writing is a skill and as it is with every skill, you continue to
learn and hone it. How can you develop your content writing skill?

1. Write
The easiest way to hone your content writing skill is to write daily. (Emphasis on writing
daily.) To become better at writing, you need to have a writing schedule and a time each
day to practice.

It may just be a few sentences, paragraphs, or a page. Just ensure that you write daily!
Don't aim for perfection, if not, you will never write. Just write as the ideas flow. Also,
don't wait for a big idea to come before you pick your pen to write. That big idea may
never come.

When you discipline yourself to create content daily, it will soon become part of you and
you will be able to write content with a slip of the finger.

2. Read
Stephen King said, "To be a good writer, you need to do two things: read a lot and write a
lot."

To become better at content writing you must increase your hunger for reading and not
just reading what you love but even what you don't love. You must be a voracious reader
and read different genres of books. Through reading, you also get inspiration to write.

When I say reading, I mean reading as a writer. There are two ways you can read, you
can either read as a reader or as a writer.

Reading a reader means you are reading for leisure, to gain knowledge about
something, or as a hobby.

Reading as a writer is an intentional pursuit whereby you read to learn the author's style,
punctuation, storytelling ability, sentence structure, word usage, and errors. Through
this, you hone your writing.

I need to reemphasize this, you need to read different genres of books. Read fiction and

18
How many books did you read last year? How many books have you read this year?
How many books have you read this month?

The bottom line is, every good writer is a reader but not every reader is a writer.
However, if you are a voracious reader you will always have the urge to write even
though many people resist it.

3. Join a Writing Community and Learn from other Content Writers

The truth is, you can't become astute at content writing in isolation. You need to be in a
community of like minds to become better. "Iron sharpens iron."

Through a writing community, you will have the privilege to learn from other content
writers. You will know what they are doing right or wrong. How they are getting
massive engagements on their content, how they generate content ideas, and how you
can stand out in your niche. Imitate what other content writers are doing, but don't lose
your uniqueness in the process.

A writing community also gives you the courage to show up daily. When you aren't
motivated to write but you see that someone just made a post and has been doing that
every day, it motivates you to write.

4. Submit to a Mentor
Writing can be frustrating if you are just starting. Sometimes you will be so frustrated
and not ready to even take your pen to write a word. However, with a mentor, you will be
jerked to write.

I remember when I just started writing, I had a mentor who I would always send my
writings to. He would proofread it, note my errors, and send it back to me to correct
them. From time to time, he would recommend some materials and courses for me. This
helped to hone my writing skill in the shortest time possible.

You need a mentor to become a good content writer. A mentor holds your hands and
shortens your journey to mastery. A mentor serves as a shoulder you can always lean on.
Get yourself one!

5. Enroll in Courses
Writing is a skill, not just a talent. Even talented writers have to learn writing to master
the art. You need to enroll for courses and training–not just free training, but paid ones.

19
A lot of newbies are always looking for free training and courses, thereby hopping from
one place to another. But the truth is, you can't get the best value in a free course or
training. Never! It is only those who pay that get the best any training has to offer.

As valuable as this book is, it is just a sneak peek of what I teach in my mentorship. So, I
would advise you to always pay for training and courses and give it your all.

20
FINAL WORDS
Now you have learned how to write valuable and engaging content from scratch. It's
time to begin writing your content now. Don't wait for a perfect time because it will
never come. You need to start taking action now by writing content using the easy
templates I shared in this book.
