PART B: READING
1. Read the passage and do the task that follows.
Mickey Mouse was not Walt Disney's first successful cartoon creation, but he is certainly his most
famous one. It was on a cross-country train trip from New York to California in 1927 that Disney first
drew the mouse with the big ears. Supposedly, he took his inspiration from the tame field mice that used
to scamper into his old studio in Kansas City. No one is quite sure why he dressed the mouse in the now-
familiar shorts with two buttons and gave him the yellow shoes. But we do know that Disney had
intended to call him Mortimer until his wife Lilian intervened and christened him Mickey Mouse.
Capitalizing on the interest in Charles Lindbergh, Disney planned Mickey's debut in the short cartoon
Plane Crazy, with Minnie as a co-star. In the third short cartoon, Steamboat Willie, Mickey was whistling
and singing through the miracle of the modern soundtrack. By the 1930s, Mickey's image had circled the
globe. He was a superstar at the height of his career.
Although he has received few minor changes throughout his lifetime, most notably the addition of
white gloves and the rounder forms of a more childish nobody, he has remained true to his nature since
those first cartoons. Mickey is appealing because he is ice. He may get into trouble, but he takes it on the
chin with a grin. He is both good-natured and resourceful. Perhaps that was Disney's own image of
himself. Why else would he have insisted on doing Mickey's voice in all he cartoon for twenty years?
When interviewed, he would say, "There is a lot of the mouse in me". And that mouse has remained one
of the most pervasive images in American popular culture.

force, that millions of Americans made them theừ own Lincoln would have been surprised that some of
his speeches came to be honoured as great literature. He sought only to be understood, and to convince.
Lincoln's third great source of strength was his iron will. The Civil War had to be carried on until the

The moon is the second brightest object in the sky after the sun. It is the onlv natural satellite of the
Earth and orbits around it. It has a diameter of about 3,476 kilometers and has many craters on its surface.
These were formed by meteor crashes millions of years ago. It takes the moon 27.3 days to make one orbit
around the earth and the same period of time to complete one rotation on its axis.
The moon is the only celestial body that has been visited by human beings. One reason is that the moon
is much closer to the earth than the other planets; it is estimated that the moon is about 24,000 miles from
the earth. We can create gravitational forces between the earth and the moon cause some interesting
effects. The most obvious is the tides. Under the gravitational effect of the moon, the water in the earth's
oceans, as they are fluid, is pulled toward the moon. This cause tides when the level of the sea rises and
falls.

Every four or ten years, something happens to the weather system. Everything changes, and scientists don't
understand why.
People call this "El Nino". It usually happens at Christmas time and El Nino is the Spanish name for the
baby Jesus.
The El Nino that started in 1982 was different from the other recent ones. It caused huge changes in the
ocean currents. It caused floods in some areas and droughts in others. There were terrible windstorms and
huge ocean waves swept houses into the sea. It did billions of dollars' worth of damage. Thousands of
people lost their lives and thousands of others were left homeless.
In 1983 the winds, ocean currents and pressure areas started to become normal again. Scientists throughout
the world are using satellites and research boats to observe the atmosphere and the ocean. It is a very
complicated problem, but if the scientists of the world work together, they should be able to find out the

I. Read the passage and do the task that follows.
Solar energy is a long lasting source of energy which can be used almost anywhere. To generate
solar energy, we only need solar cells and the sun! Solar cells can easily be installed on house roofs, so no
new space is needed and each user can quietly generate their own energy. Compared to other renewable
sources, they also possess many advantages: wind and water power relies on turbines which are noisy,
expensive and easy to break down. Solar cells are totally silent and non-polluting. As they have no moving
parts, they require little maintenance and have a long lifetime.
However, solar energy also has some disadvantages. We can only generate solar energy during
daytime because the system depends on sunlight. Besides, solar cells require large are to work effectively.
The main disadvantage of solar energy is that it
costs about twice as much as traditional sources such as coal, oil, and gas. This is because solar cells are
expensive. Scientists are hoping that the costs of solar cells will reduce as more and more people see the
advantages of this environmentally friendly source of energy.

Many modern machines contain computer chips, allowing their users to program them. For example, a
microwave oven can be "instructed" to cook a certain dish. The housework will be done by the dishwasher,

the washing machine and dryer, and so on. Most entertainment equipment will operate with computer

PART B: READING
I. Read the passage and do the task that follows.

English was first written down in the 6th century. At that time, writers had to use the twenty-three letters
of the Latin alphabet to write down what they heard. Because English has sounds that do not exist in Latin,
they added letters to represent the forty-four sounds of English. This resulted in some irregular spelling.
After the Norman invasion of England in 1066, French became the language spoken by the king and other
people in positions of power and influence. Many French words were introduced and the spelling of many
English words changed to follow French patterns. The result was a rich and irregular mix of spellings.
The printing press was invented in the 15th century. Many early printers of English texts spoke other first
languages, especially Dutch. They often paid little attention to how English words were spelled. Sometimes
technical decisions were made to give columns of print straight edges. To do this, letters were taken off the
ends of words and sometimes added to words. With time, people became used to seeing words spelled in
the same way. Fixed spellings were therefore created by the printers' decisions. Spoken English, however,
was not fixed. It continued to change, as it still does. It is no wonder that English spelling seems irregular.
Words such as although, through and cough, for example, all have the same spelling at the end, but are
pronounced differently. Words such as feet, meat and seize, on the other hand, are spelled differently but
have the same sound in the middle.

scheduled for the Fourth, including a four-hundred-mile stock car event at the Daytona International
speedway in Daytona, Florida, and an annual auto race up the fourteen-thousand-foot precipice at Pike's
Peak in Colorado.
