The temperature is rising slowly. It means that…—
It’s winter.—
It’s difficult to say… .— .
The method is a conventional one.—
The latter method differs radically from the one

(friendly, daily).

London (Part 1)
London is the capital of Great Britain. Once,
London was a small Roman town on the north bank
of the River Thames, where the Romans landed nearly
2000 years ago. But slowly it grew into one of the
world’s major cities. From about 1800 until World War
II, London was the biggest city in the world, but now
there are many cities which are much bigger. Now
London has а population of about 6,770,000. It lies on
the River Thames. London is interesting for many
things. In London one meets the past and the present,
the old and the modern.
Tourists come from all over the world to visit its
historic buildings, such as St Paul’s Cathedral, which
has а huge dome, and the Houses of Parliament, where
you can see and hear the famous clock, Big Ben. The
clock Big Ben came into service in 1859. Big Ben is
the biggest clock bell in Britain. It weighs 13.5 tons.
Tourists also come to visit its theatres, museums, and
numerous shops, such as Harrods, Marks & Spencer,
Next, Gap, Selfridges (“The customer is always right”,
said the department store owner H. Gordon Selfridge)
where you can buy everything.
Like many big cities, London has problems with
traffic and pollution. Over 1,000,000 people а day use
the London Underground. The London Underground
is the oldest one in the world. The first line was opened
in 1870. It was like а tube, that’s why it was called the
Tube. English people call the old lines the Tube, the
new lines the Underground. There are still too many
cars in the streets. The air isn’t clean, but it is cleaner

London is traditionally divided into 4 main parts.
They are Westminster, the City, the West End and the
East End. Different areas of London seem like different
cities. Westminster is the histоriсаl area of London.
Famous monuments and buildings are located there.
One of the most beautiful places is Westminster Abbey,
famous for its architecture and history. Nearly all
Kings and Queens have been crowned in the Abbey,
since the time of Conquest. Chaucer, Spencer, Dickens,
Newton, Darwin and many other famous Englishmen
and writers were buried there. There are memorials to
Shakespeare, Milton, Burns and many other English
poets and writers in the Poet’s Corner .

Birmingham
Birmingham is an industrial city in the West
Midlands of England. It is the second largest city in
Britain with the population of more than 1 million
people. It’s hard to believe that Birmingham we know
today used to be a small market town. The first
rumblings of its industrial future came in the 16th
century when local metal workers gained a national
reputation, but it wasn’t until the Industrial Revolution
that Birmingham hit the big time. As the local coal
and iron trade boomed and jewellery became an
important industry, a massive system of canals was
built to cope with the traffic. But the enormous
economic growth was in the 18th and 19th centuries.
Industrial Revolution (1750—1850) played an

Oxford
Oxford is the most famous city for its University.
Tourists and students visit it as often as London.
Oxford and Cambridge are the oldest educational
centres of Great Britain. These cities are connected
with each other by the university history. Oxford’s first
college was founded in 1249. Now Oxford and
Cambridge Universities are federation of parallel
colleges, some big, some small, each governed by its
staff and each with its chief. Маny great men studied
in these universities: Cromwell, Newton, Byron, Darwin
and others. Oxford University is the oldest in Britain
and the third oldest in Europe. Oxford University has
thirty-five separate colleges. For many years, only five
of these colleges were for women. However, since 1979
nearly all the colleges have accepted both men and
women.
It’s very interesting to know the history of Oxford.
As was the custom then, students had joined themselves
into a “Universitas” of Society — the word “University”,
like the word “College”, meant originally a society of
people with a common employment; it was only later it
came to be associated with scholarship. Those students
were all churchmen and had been studying in Oxford
at that city’s well-known schools. It was a hard life at
Oxford because of troubles between the townsfolk and
the students. “Town” and “Gown” battles were frequent.
Then one day a student accidentally killed a man of the
town. The Mayor arrested three other students, who
were innocent, and by the order of the King John (who

Cambridge
Cambridge lies about one hundred kilometres north-
east of London in that part of England called East
Anglia, a flat area which is known for its wild bird life
and fishing. The city is famous in the world as one of
the two oldest University cities in Britain — Oxford,
of course, is the first.
From whatever country you come as a student you
cannot escape the influence of the Cambridge
traditions — and they go back so far! Here, perhaps,
more than anywhere else, you may feel at one and the
same time the past, the present and even the future.
It’s easy to see how the old grey stone buildings from
the past have become the present and how the present
is giving the shape to the future.
The history of the University at Cambridge begins,
as far as it’s known, when several hundred students and
scholars arrived in the little place Cambridge after
having walked 60 miles from Oxford. The students
organized themselves very soon under the elected leader
called Chancellor, and he fixed the prices that should
be paid. That time the students were armed; they often
quarrelled with the local people for their University’s
freedom. Gradually, the idea of the College developed

Cardiff
Cardiff is the capital of Wales. Cardiff is situated on
the south-east coast of Wales, and three rivers, the Taff,
the Ely and the Rhymney flow through it into the
Bristol Channel. With the population of 300,000, Cardiff
is the Welsh largest city. It’s also the country’s main
economic, industrial and cultural centre. At about AD
75, the Roman soldiers built a fort on the place what is
now Cardiff. The Normans settled the area around it in
1050, building the Castle and founding a town around
the Castle. They built the Castle by 1090. By the early
1800s it was still a small town. Then, when Wales
became a major centre of coal mining, iron and steel
production, Cardiff served as the shipping centre for
these products and grew rapidly. By 1890 it had become
known as the Coal Metropolis of the world. Since mid-
1940s Cardiff has grown as administrative and
commercial centre of Wales. There are some places of
interest there: the Castle, the National Museum of
Wales, the Welsh Folk Museum. A large park area lies
near the centre of Cardiff, and many of the city’s major
commercial buildings are found around the Cathays
Park. The National Museum of Wales, the Law Courts
and the University are also situated here. There are
many fashionable shops and modern hotels, and the
Cardiff Castle nearby. Modern rail and road

Edinburgh
Edinburgh is the саpitаl of Scotland. It is one of the
most beautiful cities in Europe that has hardly changed
for centuries because the Romans never conquered
Scotland. Between AD 120 and 140 they build Hadrian’s
Wall, a huge wall of 118 km, to protect their Empire
south of the Scottish border. Only in 1603 the Scottish
king, James VI, became the King of England and
a century later Scotland and England were united.
A golden eagle flies over the mountains. a deer walks
through the silence of the forest. People in kilts dance
to the music of the bagpipes. Only in … Scotland. The
mountains of Scotland — they are called the Highlands —
are the wildest and, some say, the most beautiful part
of Europe. Scotland is a land of mountains, lakes and
romantic castles. The winters are cold, with plenty of
snow, but the summers are often warm and sunny. Most
farmers keep sheep, and there are many small factories,
which make fine sweaters from their wool. In some parts
of Scotland, there are very few people.
Salmon and trout swim in the clean, pure water of
the rivers. Scotch whisky is made with this water. It is
the home of Scottish tradition, music, and the most
interesting wildlife in Britain. There you can see seals,
dolphins, whales and hundreds of thousands of sea-
birds.
Scotland has its own parliament, legal system,
educational system and even its own international
football team. Scotland is famous for its own culture.

Glasgow

tours and get information of all sorts. You can even
book accommodation there, not only in that area, but
in other parts of Britain.

Belfast
Belfast is the capital of Northern Ireland.
300,000 people live there and the city is surrounded by
the high hills and river valleys. In the 17th century
Belfast was a village. Then the development of industries
like linen, rope-making, engineering, tobacco and ѕea
commerce doubled the town’s size every ten years. In
1888, when the population waѕ approaching 300,000,
the Queen Victoria — who had visited Belfast in 1849 —
gave the town the ѕtаtuѕ of a city, and the citizens built
the magnificent City Hall (opened in 1906) which
dominates the central shopping area. Northern Ireland’s
tradition of engineering is still centred in Belfast. The
world’s biggest dry dock is here. There is a good view
of the shipyard’s giant сrаnеѕ from the foot of the Albert
Clock Tower — Веlfаѕt’ѕ Big Ben — at the end of High
Ѕtreet. There are aircrafts and miѕѕile works nearby the
city, another examples of the іnduѕtrу.
Look at Веlfаѕt’ѕ rich street architecture. Ѕоmе of
the city’s best buildings are banks. There are three fine
examples in and around High Ѕtreet. The charming
red and yellow facade of the Nаtіоnаl Bank (now the
Ваnk of Ireland) wаѕ designed by William Batt (1897).
Јuѕt round the corner іn Waring Ѕtreet, the interior of
the Ulster Bank (1860) іѕ like a Venetian palace, and
