The letter “d”, listed at the end of each number shown below, indicates the “penny” size of
the nail. Penny sizing of nails originated in England where nails of various sizes were made
by hand and sold for so many pennies per 100 nails; i.e., 100 two-inch nails for 6 pennies,
100 three-inch nails for 10 pennies, etc. Today, however, not all nails are designated in
penny sizes. Some are shown in lengths to the nearest whole or fractional inch. Generally,
as the length of a nail increases, so does the gauge or diameter of the wire from which it is
made. Nails also differ in the size and shape of their head, shanks and points—as well as in
their finishes—according to their intended use.
