Development

What are the renewals made by the Church in the course of the Church history?

Reformation – Martin Luther. A former serious monk of the order of St. Augustine. His cry for
reform of the Church took place Germany in 1517 by posting his famous Ninety-five Theses. He
protested against the sale of indulgences and against other abuses in the Church. He was
excommunicated because he refused to retract what he had written. Luther’s original intent to
reform the Church, not to devide it or replace it.

Council of Trent – The Counter-Reformation was the Catholic Church’s response to Luther’s
Reformation. Pope Paul III summoned the Council of Trent in 1545. The Council articulated the
teaching of the Church as opposed to the reformers.

Some of the Catholic teachings that the Council reaffirmed were the doctrine that salvation comes
from the grace but requires good works as well, and that the Bible is not the sole source of
authority. Other teachings include: The tradition of the Church is a source of authority along with
the Bible; the Pope is the supreme head of the Church; Christ is truly present in the bread and
wine of the Eucharist; there are seven sacraments chosen by Christ and the Church the saints can
act as intermediaries for us; and Mary is the Mother of God and the Church.

On January 21,1564, Pope Pius IV approved all of the decress of all the sessions of the council
and the Councl of Trent formally came to an end.

Vatican Council I and II – up to the present date, these ecumenical councils remain to be the last
two in history of the Church. Vatican I was convened by Pope Pius IX from 1869 to 1870. Vatican
II was convened by Pope John XXIII in order to address the issues of the present time and to
renew the Church as She fulfills her mission of being Christ’s herald of the Good News to and in
the world.

Two of the most notable accomplishments of convoking Vatican I are the Constitutions
promulgated, namely: Dei Filius and Pastor Aeternus. The former deals with the interrelatedness
of Faith and Reason and the latter deals with the authority of the Pope. He possesses the right of
free communication with jurisdiction over the whole Church and that his primacy includes the
supreme teaching power to which Jesus added the prerogative of “papal infallibility.”

What is the Church’s response to the clamour of change in our society and in the world?
The Church is considered to be the reader of the signs of the times. Making use of the motto “See-
Judge-Act,” She discerns through the Gospel values the things needed in order for Her to continue
Her mission entrusted by Jesus.

What is evangelization?
Evangelization is preaching the Good News that the Kingdom of God has arrived here and now.
The central focus of the coming of Jesus is to announce the Kingdom, to make felt and
experienced in the here and now the presence of God.

The primary mission of the Church is to preach the Good News that the Kingdom of God has
arrived here and now. The Church proclaims this message in many forms but specifically in what
we call Kerygma (preaching the Gospel), Koinonia (community life, liturgy and worship), and
Diakonia (service to all).

Evangelization is integral – it makes the Church whole. The three dimensions of faith, namely;
doctrine, moral and worship aptly describe what it is all about.

What is new evangelization?

New evangelization is a technical term that refers to how the church should carry out Her mission
of evangelization in the contemporary society.

Used by John Paul II in the encyclical Redemptoris Missio and whose foundations were laid down
Evangelii Nuntiandi, new evangelization means proclaiming the same Gospel with new
expressions, new vigor, new fervor, new ardour, fuller convictions, new methods, renewed
strength, making use of the technology and involving and being open to everybody.

If evangelization is the proclamation of the Good News and the Good News is the person of Jesus,
therefore, New Evangelization is a call to everyone to develop and nurture a personal and
profound relationship with Jesus in the complexities of one’s life experiences and in the
contemporary circumstances of the present world.

What is the vision and the mission thrust of PCP II?

The vision and mission or the thrust of PCP II focused on the Renewal Integral Evangelization-
New Evangelization. This is the faith that does justice and brings transformation to and in every
person and the society.

PCP II proposes three directions: 1) Personal (that Filipinos may develop and integrated
spirituality); 2) Spiritual (that Filipinos may help build a participatory Church); and 3) Social (that
Filipinos may engage in social transformation).

10 years after PCP II, in January 2001, the CBCP evaluated the implementation of the Acts and
Decrees of PCP II through holding the National Pastoral Consultation on Church Renewal. This
gathering came up with Nine Pastoral Priorities for the Renewal of the Church. These are:
1. Integral Faith Formation
2. Empowerment of the Laity Toward Social Transformation
3. Active Participation of the Poor in the Church
4. The family as the Focal point of Evangelization
5. Building and Strengthening of Participatory Communities That Make Up the Parish as a
Community of Communities
6. Integral Renewal of the Clergy
7. Journeying with the Youth
8. Ecumenism and Inter-Religious Dialogue
9. Animation and Formation for Mission “ad Gentes”

What are the images of a renewed Church?
On February 7, 2014, during the St. Thomas Aquinas Forum held in the University of Santo
Thomas, Rev. Msgr. Gerardo Santos delivered a talk on Catholic Education in the Philippine
Church Aggiornamento and he presented several images of the renewed Church.

1. The renewed Church is the door or window whereby the world is the arena of God’s grace.
2. The renewed Church sits at one table.
3. The renewed Church commits to “let’s go for new life.”
4. The renewed Church experiences conversion of hearts and structures.
5. The renewed Church is in a state of daring waiting.

Words to Remember:
✓ Kerygma (preaching the Gospel)
✓ Koinonia (community life, liturgy and worship)
✓ Diakonia (service to all)
