Foreword
This standard has been prepared under the authority of the JCB Research Standards department.
This standard is intended solely for use in connection with the business requirements of J C Bamford Excavators
Ltd. (JCB) and is for use by appropriately qualified and competent people.
This is the fourth issue of this standard, which has been up-issued to include specific HBU requirements in clause
7.0 item 20.
Contractual and legal considerations are not part of the scope of this standard. This standard does not
relinquish any responsibility, regulatory requirements or duty of care.

1.0 Scope
This standard specifies the minimum acceptance criteria for the appearance of painted surfaces on JCB products.
This standard is applicable to all JCB painted products.
This standard does not apply to non accessible and non visual areas of a component, these are exempt from
surface appearance requirements. Typically non visible areas of the vehicle are interior of booms and closures
etc.

2.0 References
This standard incorporates provisions from other standards. These references are cited at the appropriate
places within the text and are listed hereafter. For undated references, the latest edition applies.

4200/0000 Paint system – performance requirements.
4200/0002 Paints, primers and coatings – exterior graphics and colour specifications.
ASTM D1640 Test methods for drying, curing or film formation of organic coatings at room temperature.
ISO 105-A02 Textiles – tests for colour fastness part A02: grey scale for assessing change in colour.

3.0 Concessions
In the case of a failure to conform to the requirements of this standard, a documented concession should be
generated. This concession shall clearly state:
- title and name of person requesting the concession.
- the reason why the concession is being requested.
- summary of action in place to ensure that concession will be corrected within a specified time.
- title and name of director who is authorising concession within the business unit.
A digital copy of the concession shall be filed with JCB Standards department.

4.0 Assessment method for permissible imperfections


Imperfection assessment method is based on how clearly a defect can be seen on the finished product at
different viewing distances. Lighting for assessment must correspond to full natural daylight (600 lux). Lighting
shall be of an evenly distributed intensity without a pronounced orientation.
Observer shall view component or vehicle to be assessed and accept or reject in accordance with this
document. Viewing angles are not specified (any angle).

5.0 Surface classifications

5.1 Definitions
Surfaces shall be characterised in respect to their visual impact upon the perception of the vehicle. Classification
shall be based upon 4200/0000. These are:
Class ‘A’ surfaces that have a high visual impact upon the perception of the product.
Class ‘B’ surfaces that have a visual impact upon the perception of the product.
Class ‘C’ surfaces that have no visual impact upon the perception of the product.

5.2 General requirements


No brush touch up shall be performed on an “A” class finish.
Custom colour machines and parts shall not be prepared by the application of custom colour paint over JCB
Yellow.
