1st ASSIGNMENT

1. What is History?
History is the collective story of humanity, a memories filled with triumphs,
struggles, and the ever-evolving of humanity,…it is the past that influence our
present.

2. What does a historian do? As a student of history, what do you think will be your
duties?
Being an Historian is like being a time detective. You dig through old stories, piece
together puzzles of the past, and then share these tales with others, helping everyone
understand where we come from and why things are the way they are.

3. What role does history take in the story of the Philippine society, culture, and
identity
Think of Philippine history like a family album that tells stories about where we came
from. It helps us understand why we have certain traditions, speak particular language,
and celebrate unique festivals.

4. How is history commonly defined according to Gottschalk?

Carl Gottschalk, a historian, defined history as “the remembered past.” In his view,
history is not just the collection of facts but rather a selective and subjective
interpretation of past events shaped by what people choose to remember. It
emphasizes the role of memory and the way individuals and societies construct
narratives about their past.
