fees we Gliny | Components | Bute) yet Cory ees When setting out to create the 1974 range of Technics stereo and 4-channel stereo components, our designers and engineers had a single aim in mind: to build components which would, in their price range, represent the finest possible value for money. What's more, they were determined that Technics components would, in the best traditions of high fidelity, be designed neither to add to nor take away from the sound as originally recorded. As you will see from the components displayed on the following pages, they have succeeded brilliantly on both counts. The Technics range of direct-drive turntables, for example, has neither belts nor idlers nor the usual high speed motor used to drive the platter. Instead, the platter is driven by an ultra low speed DC motor and its speed is electronically regulated to be precisely that of the record, either 33% or 45rpm. Result: negligible “wow and flutter” and perfect pitch A smaller version of this ingenious direct-drive motor is used for capstan drive in our more expensive cassette tape decks. Again, “wow and flutter” is eliminated to give both improved performance (which is further enhanced by use of the Dolby* noise reduction circuit) and longer life with greater reliability. All our amplifiers and receivers—from the ultimate SU/SE-9600 combination down to the budget-priced components—are direct-coupled. So far as we can tell, we are Japan’s, and perhaps the world’s, first maker to introduce direct-coupling on such a scale. i It is well known that one of the most crucial links in the audio component chain is the loud- speaker system. By careful reappraisal of the entire field of loudspeaker design, it has been possible to bring about great improvement. All within the tried and tested framework of the acoustic suspension principle. Nowhere in the world does any audio maker take quality control more seriously. We begin by testing—often to destruction—every prototype. And once production is under way, every component is constantly monitored to ensure that both parts and finished component are without flaw. Tests take place both at the end of the production line and on random samples; they are continued after packing to ensure that the various hazards of handling and weather during shipment by land, sea or air have all been allowed for. The importer carries out his own tests to make sure that everything is working, including various finishes which may have been given to combat climatic conditions. Although we are not required to do so, we voluntarily submit all Technics components bound for the United States for official American UL approval. We take similar steps to ensure that all exports meet with the respective country's safety regulations. Finally, having done everything humanly possible to make sure they won't be needed, we have a worldwide network of Technics service centres. So you can be sure that in the unlikely event of it needing service, your equipment will be in good hands. “Trademark of Dolby Laboratories Inc Technics Turntables Every designer and every audiophile knows only too well that ‘wow and flutter” and “rumble” are extremely hard to eliminate from a turntable, Since irregularities in the drive system are responsible for both problems, the theoretical solution is simple: produce an entirely accurate, viorationfree drive system and your troubles are over. Three years ago, we at Technics managed to turn what had long been just a gleam in an audiophile’s eye into an actual component. Our SP-10 direct-crive turntable. With no belt, no idlers and virtually no "wow and flutter,’ the SP-10 was voted “Component of the Year" in @ nationwide Japanese poll. Since then, improved production methods, in line with our policy of making the best available ai lowest possible cosi, have enabled us to bring out a whole range of direct-drive turntables with a wonderful family resemblance: superb performance. Since SL-1300 Direct-Drive High Fidelity Automatic Turntable With this transcriotion-quality turntable the platter is actually part of the motor, acting as the rotor, which—wth an electronic speed control Totales at precisely the record playing speed. Which is probably the highest production of any audio maker in the world. But we should like to point out that whereas some companies —particularly in the tape recorder field which requires a high degree of both electronic and mechanical engineering skill—merely assemble bought -in components, we make almost every part of our tape components in our own factories, Atthough size is not always an indication of a high fidelity company's quality, size has certainly played a large part in the growth of our tape recorder expertise. One of the benefits of sheer size has been our ability to maintain a continuous programme of research and development. This has served both to lower production costs and make possible innovations such as the 10-year guaranteed HPF* tape head and direct-drive tape RS-676US RS-676US High Fidelity Cassette Tape Deck with Front Controls and Dolby FM Capability Clever new “Yront-loader” design means the 676 stacks on top or between other components, fits a shelf, or can be mounted in a component console. This quality is seen at its best at the top ‘of the Technics range—in the SU/SE-9800 pre- and power amplifiers, which, like Kansas City in “Oklanomal’ have gone about as far as they can go. Moving further down the scale, less expensive components are less powerful, less flexible and give greater distortion than the near- Perfect 9600s. Yet they are quality controlled to exactly the same degree. The same applies to stereo tuners, and tuner sections of receivers. A responsible maker will never allow high sensitivity to bo Gained at the expense of an overloaded, and therefore unstable, front end. But when it comes to ‘$A-8500X FM/AM 4-Channel/2-Channel Receiver with Built-in CD-4 Demodulator This elegantly styled receiver offers a raro combination of high power (34W RMS per channel in 4-channe! mode: 85W per channel in BTL stereo), and flexibility. We at Technics have never been willing to settle for anything less than the bast we could manufacture. Which is why, amid all the fuss, we quietly set out to build a discrete 4-channel stereo ‘system around the finest medium there is: the long playing record. We were also determined that ur systems would be fully compatible with ordinary stereo and even mono equipment. The CD-4 system, which resulted from our joint efforts with the Victor Company of Japan, (an associate company), fully meets all these requirements. Despite its late arrival on the market—inevitably, the real thing takes longer to pertect—CD-4 is rapidly establishing itself as the 4-channel stereo system. Landmarks in the CD-4 story in the U.S.A. and Japan, probably the world’s most sophisticated audio markets, were the adoption of the system by RCA and the WEA (Warner, Elektra and Atlantic records) group. Technics engineers made an important contribution towards populerising CD-4 by rapidly developing a full range of CD-4-channel receivers, semniconductor cartridges and CD-4 demodulators. If you already own a good quality stereo system, you can grade up to CD-4 with minimum expense simply by adding a semiconductor cartridge, demedulator, integrated amplifier and speakers for the two rear channels. And when discrete 4-channel FM broadcasts begin (several systems are now being tested) you are ready for them. All Technics 4-channel receivers and tuners have an MPX OUT terminal into which an inexpensive adaptor can be plugged SH-3433 SH-400 $SH-3433 4-Channel Audio Scope For perfect visual observation and control of complex 4-channel systems. Has extremely wide frequency response—DC to 50,000Hz which ensures sparkling performance. Naturally it can be used to advantage to play conventional slereo. EPC-450C-II ~ Technics Speaker Systems While performance of the other links in the audio “chain’ particularly cassette tape decks and amplifiers—has dramatically improved in recent years, speaker systemns have too often tended to remain, 80 to speak, on the shelf. By going back to the beginning and examining every aspect of speaker design Technics audio engineers have succeeded in achieving considerable improvements. in speaker performance. Interestingly enough, considering the “revolutionary” speaker systerns which always seem to be coming on the market, Technics speakers are completely conventional ‘Their superior performance is due to the use of new materials and design modifications to the well: tried acoustic suspension format. These new materials include @ Technios-developed titanium foil for the diaphragms, a new kind of cone paper and a linear core completely iree from eddy currents. SB-1000 ‘SB-1000 Acoustic Suspension 3-Way 3-Speaker System A single figure trom the spec. sheet — harmonic distortion of less than 0.2% across the audio spectrum—wil tell the knowledgeable hii buff that loudspeaker performance has finally caught up with that of the latest state-of-the-art amplifiers As you know, there is more gimmickry in speaker design than in many areas of hifi Gesign. So it's interesting that the 1000's incomparable fidelity has been made possible not by some “revolutionary breakthrough in loudspeaker design” but by careful reassessment of well-tried principles. Briefly this speaker system represents perhaps the ultimate extension of the acoustic suspension design. By re-thinking every part, and innovating several components from diaphragms to cone paper to core materials, our engineers have created a system capable of taking a proud place next to the finest amplifiers money can buy. 19 20 SB-501 $B-501 Acoustic Suspension 3-Way 3-Speaker System Excellent cost/periormance ratio of the 501 makes it highly desirable for tne audio buff on a budget.
