Exercise 1
3H2 + N2 —> 2NH3
Two different stream of Hydrogen stream and nitrogen stream one at pressure 2
kpa and mol flow is 50 kmol/hr also temperature is 5 °C and other at 3 kpa and
mole flow is 50 kmol/hr and temperature is 90 °C.
Use ASPEN software to simulate the process mix of these two streams.
Choose ping robinson as fluid package

Exercise 2

You are tasked with designing a distillation column in Aspen HYSYS to

separate a binary mixture of acetone and methanol . The feed to the distillation
column consists of a 30 mol% acetone and 70 mol% methanol.
Design the distillation column to produce an overhead distillate stream
containing 95 mol% acetone and a bottoms product stream containing 5 mol%
acetone. The distillation column is to operate at a pressure of 1 atm withe feed
temperature of 40°C. Design the column to achieve this separation.
Exercise 3
We need to separate a mixture of five paraffins into light and heavy fraction by
using a distillation column with 12 trays, a full reflux condenser, and a Kettle
reboiler.
The feed stream (1000 Ibmol/hr) consists of 3% (mole %) ethane, 20%
propane, 37% n-butane, 35% n-pentane and 5% -hexane at 225 °F and 250
psia, which enters the column on the sixth tray, counting from the top.
The condenser and reboiler pressures are 248 and 252 psia, respectively.
The preliminary design specifications require a reflux ratio of 6.06 and a vapor
overhead product of 226 Ibmol/hr. Subsequently, the design is modified to
ensure propane overhead flow of 191 Ibmol/hr and n-butane bottom flow of
365 Ibmol/hr.

Calculate: The Condenser, the Reboiler Temperatures & the Reflux Ratio after
modification

Exercise 4

Ethyl chloride will be produced by the gas-phase reaction of HCI with ethylene
over a copper chloride catalyst supported on silica as:
C2H4 + HCI → C2H5CI
• The feed streams is composed: 50% mol HCL, 48% mol C2H4 and
2% mol of Nitrogen at 100 kmol/hr at 25 celcius at 1 atm.
• Since the reaction achieves only 90% conversion, the ethyl chloride product is
separated from the unreacted reagents and is recycled.
• The process is operated at atmospheric pressure, to prevent accumulation of
inert gas in the system 10 kmol/hr is withdrawn in a purge stream (A).
• Show the effect of the flow rate of the purge stream (A) on the Recycle
stream (B) and the composition of the reactor feed
