Assignment Sheet #4: Kinematics of Rigid Bodies

1. A race car travels around a horizontal circular track that has a radius of 300 ft. If the car
increases its speed at a constant rate of 7 ft/s2, starting from rest, determine the time needed for it to
reach an acceleration of 8 ft/s2. What is its speed at this instant?

2. The acceleration of Point A is defined by the relation a=-1.8 sin kt, where a and t are expressed in
m/s2 and seconds, respectively, and k = 3 rad/s. Knowing that x = 0 and v = 0.6 m/s when t = 0,
determine the velocity and position of Point A when t = 0.5 s. at this instant if the speed of point C
is twice of A, determine the angular velocity and acceleration of the link BC. BC=30 cm.

3. A rectangular plate swings from arms of equal length as shown below. What is the magnitude of
the angular velocity of the plate?

4. Knowing that wheel A rotates with a constant angular velocity and that no slipping occurs
between ring C and wheel A and wheel B, which of the following statements concerning the
angular speeds are true?

5. The motion of an oscillating flywheel is defined by the relation
θ = θ0e–3πt cos 4πt, where θ is expressed in radians and t in
seconds. Knowing that θ0 = 0.5 rad, determine the angular
coordinate, the angular velocity, and the angular acceleration
of the flywheel when (a) t = 0, (b) t = 0.125 s.

6. A small grinding wheel is attached to the shaft of an electric motor which has a rated speed of
3600 rpm. When the power is turned on, the unit reaches its rated speed in 5 s, and when the
power is turned off, the unit coasts to rest in 70 s. Assuming uniformly accelerated motion,
determine the number of revolutions that the motor executes in reaching its rated speed.

7. Load B is connected to a double pulley by one of the two

inextensible cables shown. The motion of the pulley is controlled
by cable C, which has a constant acceleration of 9 in./s2 and an
initial velocity of 12 in./s, both directed to the right. Determine
the number of revolutions executed by the pulley in 2 s.
