Understanding Trauma-Informed Approaches

What is Trauma?

Trauma is an emotional response to a deeply disturbing or distressing event that

overwhelms an individual's ability to cope. It can be caused by a single incident or

repeated experiences of physical, emotional, or sexual abuse, neglect, violence, or

other overwhelming events.

What is a Trauma-Informed Approach?

A trauma-informed approach is a way of understanding and responding to individuals

and situations through the lens of their potential experiences with trauma. It recognizes

the impact of trauma on a person's physical, emotional, and mental health, and seeks to

create safe and supportive environments that promote healing and well-being.

Key Principles of a Trauma-Informed Approach:

● Safety: Fostering a physical and emotional environment where individuals feel

safe and secure.

● Trustworthiness and Transparency: Building trust with individuals by being

honest, reliable, and respecting their confidentiality.

● Peer Support: Encouraging and providing opportunities for individuals to

connect with others who have similar experiences.

● Collaboration and Mutuality: Working collaboratively with individuals and

respecting their right to make decisions in their own care.

● Empowerment, Voice, and Choice: Empowering individuals to have control

over their experiences and decisions.

● Cultural, Historical, and Gender Issues: Recognizing and respecting the

diverse experiences and needs of individuals based on their cultural background,

history, and gender identity.

Benefits of a Trauma-Informed Approach:

● Increased feelings of safety and security

● Improved communication and trust

● Increased self-esteem and empowerment

● Reduced symptoms of trauma and stress
