Operator Compartment
There are two operator compartments, Forward Stance and Side Stance. The
main difference between the two is the control handle. The side stance handle is
a new design.
Forward Stance
The forward stance handle is listed as Fore/Aft Handle on the electrical
schematic. Operators must push or pull the forward stance handle to actuate
travel. The actuator for lift and lower is the rocker switch on the face of the
handle. The rocker switch on the back of the handle actuates carriage extension
and retraction. The four push buttons on the face of the handle are for tilt and
side shift. Side shift is an option unless the truck is equipped with a double reach
carriage. The horn button is also on the face of the handle.

Direction switch
A specific series of actions are required by the operator to enable the Aft Travel
Control Handle. These are:

CAUTION:
Operator should verify vehicle steers in desired
manner, automotive type steering or reverse steering.
NMHG 8
Familiarization
Side Stance
Travel is actuated by moving the side stance handle left and right. Lift and
lowering is actuated by moving the side stance handle up and down. There is a
four way switch on the side stance handle for carriage functions. Tilt, extend,
and retract are standard. Side shift is optional for single reach carriages; side
shift comes with all double reach carriages. To actuate side shift, the trigger
must be depressed prior to selecting side shift on the four way switch.

Covers
For most repair jobs, it will be necessary to remove the covers to access
components for troubleshooting and or replacement.

Brake System
The same electromechanical brake is used for all of these models. The brake
fastens to the top of the traction motor. The brake is spring applied, electrically
released when travel is requested by the operator.

Electrical System
The standard battery connector for these models is a SB350 battery connector.
The color of the connector designates the voltage of the truck’s electrical system.
A red connector designates a 24 volt system, a gray connector designates a 36
volt system.
Contactor
These models only require one contactor. The contactor is under the operator
compartment. Buss bars connect the contactor to the motor controllers. The
contactor is voltage specific.

Mast Sensor
The control system uses a proximity sensor to determine when the mast is above
free lift. Facing the mast, the sensor is on the right hand side. The sensor is
visible with the battery removed. The connector for the sensor is near the motor
controller’s cooling fan behind the front left cover.

Optional Laser
An optional fork mounted laser is available for all Americas models. The laser
projects a solid line on the racks. The laser is installed and tested at the factory,
then removed for shipping. Dealerships are required to reinstall components that
were removed for shipping.

Americas
For Americas models, the option requires software only. Americas models are
equipped with a pressure transducer that the control system uses for powered
lowering and regen lowering. When Load Weight Display is ordered, a file is
loaded into the control system to use the signal from the pressure transducer to
display the weight of the load.
Retail
For Retail models, the pressure transducer and software file are required. The
pressure transducer is added to the hydraulic control valve below the hydraulic
pump and motor assembly.

Familiarization
Hydraulic Systems
There are two unique hydraulic systems, one for Americas models and one for
Retail models.
Americas
Americas models have two separate hydraulic circuits, one for lift and lower and
the other for auxiliary carriage functions. Flow for lift and lower is provided by the
main pump and motor located beside the hydraulic tank. The pump is equipped
with an integral valve. Flow for auxiliary carriage functions is provided by an
auxiliary pump motor below the main pump and motor.
For the Americas models, there are two performance options for the main
hydraulic pump motor and a UL EE rated motor for EE applications. The
difference in the motors is power and overall length (OAL). The UL EE motor is
an enclosed motor.
†High performance motor increases unloaded lift speed to 114 fpm, from 100 fpm
Δ
High performance motor increase unloaded lift speed to 130 fpm, from 114 fpm
27 Technical Training

Retail
The pump and motor for Retail models are located beside the hydraulic tank. A
proportional hydraulic control valve fastens to the frame directly below the pump
and motor. Only a 24 volt pump motor is available. Retail models can have a 36
volt or 24 volt traction motor.
Tilt Cylinder

Familiarization
Steering System
The steering system consists of the steer assembly, steering motor and proximity
sensor, and caster wheel. There are two steer assemblies, fixed and adjustable.
Adjustable steering has a pull knob that enables operators to pull up to move the
center of rotation. Both fixed and adjustable steer assemblies have a Dual Hall
Effect steering control unit. The steering control unit fastens to the base of the
steer assembly.
Steer Assembly
The steer motor mounts to the same plate as the traction motor. The proximity
sensor is used at start up to set the vehicle for straight travel. The standard
caster wheel rotates as the vehicle is steered. All caster wheels (standard and
steered caster) have an adjustable elastomer spring that requires periodic
inspection.

Traction System
An AC powered traction motor and a master drive unit (MDU) make up the
traction system. The traction motor does not rotate during steering. The traction
motors feature a temperature sensor, an external mounted speed sensor, and a
tapered drive shaft. The temperature sensor is not serviceable. The traction
motors insulation rating is Class F.
Speed Sensor
Traction Motors
Different traction motors are available for
these models.
Pinion Gears
The drive shafts of the traction motors are tapered. A pinion gear on the drive
shaft engages a gear in the MDU. As the motor rotates, the pinion gear drives
the gear in the MDU for travel. The pinion gear on the shaft is dictated by the
gear in the drive unit not the motor.
