Almost as soon as the Arab armies of Islam conquered
new lands, they began erecting mosques and palaces and
commissioning other works of art as expressions of their faith
and culture. Many aspects of religious practice in Islam also
emerged and were codified. The religious practice of Islam,
which literally means "to submit to God", is based on tenets that
are known as the Five Pillars, arkan, to which all members of the
Islamic community, Umma, should adhere.

1
A The Profession of Faith-The Shahada
. The Profession of Faith, the
shahada, is the most fundamental
expression of Islamic beliefs. It simply
states that "There is no God but God and
Muhammad is his prophet." It underscores
the monotheistic nature of Islam. It is an
extremely popular phrase in Arabic
calligraphy and appears in numerous
manuscripts and religious buildings.

The shahada is a Muslim's confession of faith in Allah as the only God

who deserves to be worshipped, and in Muhammad as the last prophet sent by
Allah SWT. The shahada is two sentences: "Ashaduala ilaha illallah, wa
ashaduanna muhammadurrasulullah" which means "I testify that there is no
God but Allah SWT, and I testify that the Prophet Muhammad SAW is the
messenger of Allah."

B Daily Prayers-Salat
.

Muslims are expected to pray five times a day. This does not mean
that they need to attend a mosque to pray; rather, the salat, or the daily prayer,
should be recited five times a day. Muslims can pray anywhere; however,
they are meant to pray towards Mecca. The faithful pray by bowing several
times while standing and then kneeling and touching the ground or prayer mat
with their foreheads, as a symbol of their reverence and submission to Allah.
On Friday, many Muslims attend a mosque near midday to pray and to listen
to a sermon, khutba.

2
The command to pray is stated in the Qur'an Surah An Nisa verse 103 which
reads :

Meaning: When you have completed the prayer, remember Allah SWT, whether
you are standing, sitting, or lying down. When you feel secure, perform the
prayer. Verily prayer is an obligation whose time has been fixed upon the
believers.

Fasting during Ramadan-Saum

C
.

Fasting is the act of refraining from eating, drinking, and other

activities during the month of Ramadan, which is the holy month in Islam.
Fasting starts from dawn to sunset. The purpose of fasting is to cleanse the
soul, get closer to Allah, and feel empathy towards people who are hungry
and deprived.

During the holy month of Ramadan, the ninth month in the Islamic
calendar, Muslims are expected to fast from dawn to dusk. While there are
exceptions made for the sick, elderly, and pregnant, all are expected to refrain
from eating and drinking during daylight hours.
The command to fast is found in Surah Al Baqarah verse 183. Here is
the recitation:
Meaning: O you who believe, it is obligatory upon you to fast as it was
obligatory upon those who were before you so that you may fear Allah.

3
D lms-Giving-Zakat

Zakat is an obligation to give

part of the property owned to those
who are entitled to receive it. Zakat
is used to help the poor, orphans,
widows, people in debt, and other
charitable purposes. Zakat aims to
spread wealth and reduce social
disparities in Muslim society.

The giving of alms is the third pillar. Although not defined in the Qu'ran,
Muslims believe that they are meant to share their wealth with those less
fortunate in their community of believers.
The command of zakat is stated in Surah Al Baqarah verse 43 which reads:
‫الزكى َةَ َوات ُىا الصَّلىةََ َوا َ ِق ْي ُوىا‬
َّ ‫ار َكعُ ْىا‬
ْ ‫الز ِك ِعيْيََ َه ََع َو‬
ّٰ
Meaning: Establish the prayer, pay the zakat and bow with those who bow.

E Pilgrimage to Mecca-Hajj

All Muslims who are able are

required to make the pilgrimage to Mecca
and the surrounding holy sites at least
once in their lives. Pilgrimage focuses on
visiting the Kaaba and walking around it
seven times. Pilgrimage occurs in the 12th
month of the Islamic Calendar.

Hajj is an act of worship performed at least once in a lifetime by Muslims

who are physically and financially able. Hajj involves traveling to the city of
Makkah in Saudi Arabia, where pilgrims perform a series of rituals,
including tawaf around the Kaaba.

Linguistically, the word Ulul Azmi comes from Arabic which
consists of two words, namely the word 'ulul' and also 'azmi'. The meaning of
the word 'ulu' or 'uli' is having or having, while 'azmi' means determination or
strong determination. When the two words above are combined, it becomes
ulul 'azmi. A prophet and apostle with the title Ulul Azmi means a messenger
who has extraordinary fortitude, patience and tenacity in carrying out his
duties, despite facing various obstacles from his people.

6
A Prophet Nuh AS

Prophet Noah is included in the list

of ulul azmi messengers. He also ranks
third in the list of 25 prophets. Noah had
fortitude and patience in preaching, even
when he received opposition from his own
family.Aged about 900 years, much of his
time was spent in preaching.even so, only
a small portion of his people were willing
to follow him.
Many people, including his wife and son Kan'an, denied Prophet
Musa's teachings and attempted to kill him. Despite this, a small portion of
his followers followed him. Prophet Musa received a revelation from Allah
SWT to build a large boat in the forest, which made him a madman
. Despite the deniers calling him mad, he continued to preach with
his followers. When the boat was completed, Allah SWT revealed his
torment to those who disbelieved. After all his followers boarded the ship,
a flood occurred, and his wife and son refused to join. However, when his
fatherly instincts led him to invite his son to join the ship, he continued to
preach.

B Prophet Ibrahim AS

The next ulul azmi messenger is Prophet

Ibrahim. Many motivational stories
related to the monotheism of the father
of Prophet Ismail. One of them came
when he opposed his father named Azar,
a famous idol maker at that time.

7
Prophet Ibrahim was sent in the area of Iraq which was famous for
its arbitrary ruler, King Namrud. Even so, he still invited people to believe
in Allah SWT and abandon idols. Although the people still refused,
Prophet Ibrahim did not despair and used his intelligence to confront the
king and his followers.
Prophet Ibrahim destroyed idols during a ceremony, leading King
Namrud to arrest him for forbidden worship. Despite being sentenced to
burning alive, he lived through the power of Allah SWT, a miraculous feat.
"We said: "O fire be cool, and be salvation for Ibrahim." (QS al-Anbiya:
69)

C Prophet Musa AS

Prophet Musa was also included in the ulul azmi messenger

because of his patience in dealing with the Children of Israel. The people
are known as people who like to disobey the rules of Allah SWT. In
addition, he also faced King Fir'aun who was known as a king who claimed
to be God. From the time of his birth, Pharaoh ordered his soldiers to kill
the baby boys of the Children of Israel. The mother of the prophet Moses
was afraid, but her mother received orders to wash the baby Moses into the
Nile River. The baby was found by the wife of King Pharaoh whose name
was Asiyah. The baby lived and lived under the care of Pharaoh's wife and
was made an adopted son. As an adult, Moses was elevated to become a
prophet and apostle and was given the task of preaching to the Children of
Israel.

8
Pharaoh, who considered himself a god, felt anxious about the
existence of the Prophet Moses who opposed and endangered his position as
king. Then Fir'aun challenged a power struggle with the Prophet Musa and
lost, one of which was because of the motto of the Prophet Musa. Was
defeated, one of them because of the miracle of the stick from Allah SWT.
Fir'aun's soldiers were sent to capture Prophet Moses, who, with the
permission of Allah SWT, hit his stick into the sea, causing it to split into a
road. Fir'aun and his soldiers chased Moses through the split sea, but were
drowned by Allah SWT. Prophet Musa and his followers survived and
continued their missionary journey.

D Prophet Isa AS

The next messenger of Allah was

Prophet Jesus (peace be upon him). The first
miracle he received was even before he was
born. By the power of Allah SWT, he was
born without a father. In fact, his mother,
Maryam, was known as a woman who was
devout and pious. This is an event that proves
the power of Allah SWT.

Even so, not everyone believed, and he was even accused of being
an illegitimate child. Then the next miracle occurred, as a baby Prophet Isa
could speak and protect his mother from prejudice by giving an explanation.
As an adult, Prophet Isa was appointed prophet to preach and teach
monotheism to his people. Similar to other prophets with the title Ulul
'Azmi, many of his people reviled and insulted him. Prophet Isa, known for
his patience and steadfastness, carried out the mandate of Allah SWT. His
followers were called Hawariyyun, but his friend Yahuda betrayed and
gained followers.

9
Despite being arrested and about to be killed by crucifixion, he was
saved by Allah SWT's permission. Prophet Isa also possessed miracles
such as healing blind people, bringing dead people to life, and bringing
down dishes with the permission of Allah SWT.

E Prophet Muhammad SAW

The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) was among the apostles of ulul

azmi. Islamic history has recorded a lot of his patience in the face of insults
and diatribes from the Quraysh who opposed his teachings. Muhammad
was known by the community as an honest and trustworthy figure who
eventually he was nicknamed al-Amiin. At the age of 40, he was appointed
as an apostle. In the Quran, it is explained that the Prophet Muhammad was
the last prophet..

Meaning: "Muhammad is not the father of any man among you, but
he is the Messenger of Allah and the Seal of the Prophets, and Allah is the
Knower of all things." (QS al-Ahzab: 40).
Prophet Muhammad faced challenges from family and religious
leaders, but persevered and migrated to Medina with permission from
Allah SWT. With extraordinary support, he and his followers reconquered
Makkah and resumed preaching. The Quran, a revelation of Allah SWT,
became the greatest miracle, convincing more people of Islam's teachings
and spreading it worldwide.

Islamic Schools in Indonesia

Islamic schools in Indonesia can be divided into three main types. Of

the two types of Islamic schools, pesantrens are the oldest and regarded as the
bastion of Islamic knowledge as well as the main provider of Islamic scholars
and teachers. Focussing on the transmission of the classical Islamic sciences,
pesantrens teach subjects such as Qur‟an, ḥadīth (collection of sayings and
deeds of the Prophet Muhammad), jurisprudence (fiqh), Arabic grammar,
mysticism (taṣawwuf), and the Arab sciences (ālāt). A distinctive feature of
pesantren education is the learning of classical Islamic commentaries known as
kitab kuning (literally, „yellow books‟).

The second type is madrasah which are distinguished from the

pesantrens in their mission and modern approaches to the school set-up,
curriculum and pedagogy. Unlike pesantrens that aim to nurture religious
scholars, madrasahs are set up to create “learning Muslims” who are ready for
secular professional jobs. All madrasahs today adopt a government-approved
madrasah curriculum consisting of 70 percent general subjects and 30 percent
religious subjects.
