called Igue festival. The festival is
an annual event celebrated in Benin
to usher in the new year.

They speak the Edo


language or the Bini
language. The city's people
have one of the richest
clothing cultures on the
African continent and are
known for their beading.

Following Nigeria's independence from


British rule in 1960, Benin City became
the capital of the Mid-West Region
when the region separated from the
Western Region in June 1963.
