Question 1
1.1.
- The story or fabula is the events that occurs in the
story that form the narrative.
For example, in the short story Sethunya likes girls
better by W. Molefhe, the event that form the
narrative is when Sethunya find the article of the
fourth-one years old chimpanzee called Jonnie that
escape from the Zoo to find it freedom and was shoot
and killed the staff of zoo to her she relates with the
story and think how would she be judged if she leaves
her marriage to be with the girl.
-The narrative or sjuzet this refer on the way these
event that has occur on how has been observed and
narrated.
In Sethunya likes girls better, we find that the thought
of Sethunya being caught performing adultery with the
women will embarrassed her mother and disappoint
her as she made it clear at the first time held stories of
her daughter kissing a women was not acceptable, and
Sethunya didn’t want to disappoint her husband who
was so kind and caring with her too.
1.2. focaliser – in short story Sethunya likes girls better
the focaliser is Sethunya because she the one
observing all the event and all the thought of the story
that are narrated about what she experiences as a
women and how would the community, mother and
her husband feel if she can tell them that she wants to
date a girl then being with the man.
Character –this part in Sethunya likes girls better the
character that we are presented is the Jonnie the
Chimpanzee that was killed in the zoo because she
wanted to be free from the world of being photoshoot
by tourist and the triggers the feeling of Sethunya and
she started comparing herself with that chimpanzee on
how will the community treat her if she decide to leave
her marriage and date the women ,the thoughts of
disappointing her mother and her husband was so
unbearable and being judged as they commented on
Kgomotso that she needed a man to change her.
Question 2
2.1. temporal relation is the time text that the writer or
narrator construct in the story on when and where the
certain event occurs in the short story.
Order
- In short story Sethunya likes girls better, as a
reader we were taken to the past of Sethunya
when she used to love play soccer but her mother
will rather take her to church and she will often
tell her how should a girl behave even the way she
sits her mother with shout on her and tells her to
sits like a girl.
Duration
- In the story of Sethunya likes girl better we find
that Thato and Sethunya they had been married
for our 5 years but that duration cannot stop
Sethunya from thinking how it will be if her
mother didn’t judge her for dating the girl at the
young age, she even thinks of the reason to leave
her husband but Thato hasn’t cheated or
misbehave in their marriage.
Frequency
- That where the event keeps repeating throughout
the story, in the story of Sethunya the article that
Sethunya find keep on appearing which remind
her what if she didn’t marry Thato and choose
dating girls what will society treats her.

3.1. characterizations – that the part where the
narrator describe the main character in the story as in
the story of Sethunya, the narrator describe Sethunya
as a loving person and someone who respect adults as
she put her happiness aside to make her mother proud
by marrying a boy instance of dating Kgomotso which
was the thing that was going to disappoint her mother.
3.2.
Direct characterizations method is when the narrator
describes the character in straightforward manner
through;
 Physical description- this where the character is
described by color of the skin, blue eyes.
 The passion of the personage –that where the
narrator tells us the hobbies of the personage in
the story.
 Inner thoughts –that where we find the main
character being buried in deep thoughts by the
event that is happening in the moment.
Indirect characterization method indicates how is a
character is like by revealing their personality through
following description;
 Speech – this is where we find the dialogue
between characters in the story.
 Outward appearance- that where we are told with
actual things of the character that we see or
imagine like hair style in the head or the clothes
the personage wearing.
 Environment- this part of indirect characterization
we are told about the environment the story is
told and how do they live like Christianity and
traditions of the community.
 Action- those are event appear once in a while in
the story like the killing or the murder.
3.3. Example of direct characterization method;
 Physical description – we are introduced to
Sethunya as a young Tswana girl who is married to
Thato who is her husband.

Example of indirect characterization method;


 Speech –in Sethunya likes girl better they is the
dialogue that take place between Sethunya and
her mother that explain why Sethunya decides to
marry a man so she won’t be a disappointment to
her mother [ “Please listen to what the women tell
you, my child,” her mother
had said. “They know what marriage is.”
“Don’t worry, Mma. I won’t embarrass you.”]

Question 4
The story of Sethunya likes girls better is narrated in
the village of Botswana.
- The first internal space where it takes1 place it
where Sethunya find the piece of the article in the
taxi that reminded her about the lie she is living at,
that lie of her loving the women better then man,
that tells us that Sethunya was battling to come
out as lesbian in her community because she was
afraid to be judged and bring a shame to her
mother and her husband.
- In this story most actual event happens when the
personage Sethunya trying to think what it will be
like to live the life she wanted without disappoint
people ,everything Sethunya think about the life of
Jonnie the chimpanzee that as shoot in the zoo
trying to escape she thinks about her trying to get
her mother accepting her about her sexuality and
her caring husband understanding why she like
girls but in those thoughts she is afraid being
rejected by the society where they don’t think it is
the right way for the girls to love same gender.
