Good day, everyone. Today, we'll delve into the fascinating world of culinary tourism and
resilience in Surigao City.
Surigao City, nestled in the heart of the Caraga region in the Philippines, is renowned for its
cultural diversity and breathtaking natural landscapes. Today, we'll focus on three pillars:
existing culinary tourism, food production, and resilience.
Surigao offers a tantalizing array of culinary experiences, blending indigenous flavors with
international influences. From the savory delights of Kinilaw and Sinuglaw to the unique taste of
Budbud Kabog and Hinatukan, Surigao's culinary scene is a feast for the senses. The city also
hosts various culinary events and festivals, such as the Tilaw Food Festival.
The Tilaw Food Festival, meaning "taste" in the local dialect, celebrates Surigaonon culinary
heritage. Through this 3 day food fairs and competitions, this event aims to elevate the city's
food and beverage industry, showcasing its rich gastronomic offerings.
Surigao serves as a bustling hub of agricultural and aquacultural activity. The city's fertile land
and favorable climate support the cultivation of key crops like rice, corn, coconut, and bananas,
alongside a bounty of seafood, including tuna, lapu-lapu, and crabs, according to Office of the
Municipal Agriculture (OMA) 2022 Agri-Fishery profile.
Despite facing various challenges, Surigao has demonstrated remarkable resilience. Community-
driven initiatives and collaborative efforts have been instrumental in overcoming adversity,
highlighting the strength and spirit of its people.
True resilience entails not just smiles, but blood, sweat and tears: that is, the labor of building
capacity among communities to deal with natural hazards, and of strengthening our sense of
national solidarity.
Our plan includes initiatives to improve access to markets, tourist sites, and essential services,
while also enhancing resilience against future disasters.
We're committed to providing financial assistance, technical training, and access to markets for
local farmers and producers, prioritizing their resilience against future challenges.
Through targeted marketing campaigns and collaboration with local stakeholders, we aim to
showcase Surigao's unique culinary offerings, creating memorable experiences for visitors and
residents alike.
Effective implementation of our plan requires collaboration between government agencies, (non-
government organizations) NGOs, the private sector, and local communities. Together, we can
ensure its success.
In conclusion, Surigao City stands at a crossroads, poised to emerge stronger with resilience,
determination, and strategic planning. By investing in infrastructure, supporting local producers,
and promoting culinary tourism, we can build a brighter future for Surigao's residents.
Thank you for your attention and participation. We look forward to working together to realize
Surigao's full potential. It's a Sur Thing at Surigao City!
